4 - Wanted to jump in to these blog sites. I'm a newbie to Beyetta. I've been on it since Monday 10/23/2006. I'm still not sure about my eating. I'm going to be hitting these blogs for more info, as I seem to either eat too much or too little, and both leave me a bit woozy. The 2nd day my bs went down to 59 until I drank some oj, then it went up to 209. Geeze.

5 - Dzdmona,Geeze is the right word. It is hard in the beginning to figure out just how much or what to eat. You posted on "Hug Island" if you go to the side bar and click on meals and nutrition or byetta you will get a lot more responses.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Byetta[ lizard spit] and to our "Gilly Club" [byetta users].You will learn your way around the forums[islands] in no time. have a great day. (Comment this)

6 - Greetings from old Grandma Jean. Well, I have weathered my second back surgery. This time we have hit a glitch which I will check out with the neurologist on Monday--two weeks after surgery. My right leg isn't working right. And it is very painful--I consider things painful if they hurt so much I can't sleep. I am going through Novalog like crazy. See my endo in about two weeks. Dani--it is good to see you posting again. This site almost up and died but hopefully will get back in gear. Thank you all for your support. It is surprising how much you miss it when it lags....Love to all of you from Grandma Jean (Comment this)

7 - Eric,

I'm in Wheat Ridge on the border with Golden. I was just in Loveland yesterday. We walked around Estes Park then took the scenic route back home and went through Loveland. Great to see another Colorado person. Listening to the Bronco game right now. (Comment this)

8 - Hey Geri, who are the Broncos? I mean the pretenders I mean losers?? my family calls me a fair weather fan. My youngest (14 year old) says i should'nt be allowed in the house when I'm dissen his DONKEYS... LOL.. Ireally love um but hate to lose.
I have friends that live near you, The Wagners (GUS & Colett) on Parfet Street , Doug Smith & Unrues all in you general area. Have you read some of our distinguished Coloradan David Mendosa's info & Blogs?
My wife thinks I'm reading too much about Byetta and all the other information. Maybe but i kinda ignored my diabeties for along time and now I'm kinda scared.
Thanks Geri, good to talk to a local

I'm with your son, dissen our Broncos. I hate to lose too, so I actually quit watching the whole game because I get upset too easily. I just listen to the games now. I think they do better when I don't watch the whole game so I watch, go do something, watch, go online, watch, read, you get the idea.

Have a nice evening. geri (Comment this)

14 - Grandma Jean,
my mom had back surgery 8/25/06.
after she was home, she developed extreme pains shooting down her legs every time she stood up from urinating. it was so severe, she tried standing up and going into a plastic cup. well, she got the pain anyway! the neuosurgeon explained that since they DID move the nerves and disrupt them in a way, that some of her "connections" were confused and it would take some time for them to find their way again. they DID, and those pains went away after a few weeks. sincerely hope yours is that simple. back surgery is a bear.
sending good thoughts your way! feel better soon. (Comment this)

15 - Tami--thank you for the encouragement. My legs are both working pretty well now but they still are very painful. This coming Tuesday I have another MRI and doppler tests on the legs. We will track it down some way. They are talking about putting stints in if the arteries are not doing their job. Dani--it is so good to hear from you again. Hope you are doing well. This coming week-end Kern and I celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. He has shaped up pretty well ! Last week we went to the eye specialist (diabetic retinologist) at the University of Minnesota. We had to walk three blocks and I had to stop seven times and was sweating buckets because my legs hurt so. I'm not ready to give up. Too fiesty I guess. Leah, how are you doing? 16 - Grandma Jean,
Happy 50th Anniversary. What a fantastic milestone in your lives. WHOO HOO!

I'm just going to say that I've been in pain in my knee for 37 years now and last week I went to an acupuncturist and the relief from pain is amazing to me. It's still there but the balled up feeling I've always had is gone and I can bend it for longer periods of time. Thought I'd mention it in case it might be something you would like to check out.

Again Congrats on your 50th Wedding Anniversary.

my brother is an acupuncturist and herbalist in upstate new york. there are many who swear by acupuncture. as i'm sure you know, it is an older form of medicine than any here in the west. if it gives you any sort of relief, then that's great! (Comment this)

20 - Hi, to all you special friends! I spent the day in Sioux Falls for medical reasons yesterday. Got the assistant to the doc today so no questions got answered. To drive 130 miles to see an assistant was a big disappointment. She guessed the doctor thought I was too far into diabetes to use byetta! And all afternoon I spent in another MRI and doppler tests for my legs. Of course, the technicians cannot tell you anything so I didn't even ask. Some day within the next two weeks the doc will call. I am so used to the MRIs that I sleep in them and SNORE. The technicians all think that is very funny as most people come out yelling and screaming and I say, I think I fell asleep and they counter with, "We KNOW you fell asleep!" Oh, my A1c was 7.4. Too high but with all the stuff happening to my body, it could be worse. My e-mail address is: jeans@frontiernet.net. We had an early Thanksgiving last weekend at my daughter's so now we can all relax and know 34 people weigh a bit more this week! Whatever the test results are, I am going to wait until after November 24th because I want to bask in the day. Then we will do what we can do. I am so blessed with a loving and supportive family. And I do all my commmunion and sick call visits around my schedule of "stuff". Must start on them tomorrow for this month. Love to you all and have a happy turkey day. Grandma Jean (Comment this)

26 - Hi, friends! GrandmaJean checking in. I have an appointment with a neuro-muscular doc at Mayo on January 9th. I will NOT become an invalid...My dear daughter had Christmas at her house and all I had to bring was my Swedish meatballs! One of the twins (age 2 1/2) went swimmiing in the toilet! More hilarious antics from them give me great laughs. Good health to all of you and I'll report back after seeing the Mayo man. Love to you all and a great new year. Grandma Jean (Comment this)

27 - Happy New Year to All!!! Of course, all the new resolutions are being made. I have cheated big time over the holidays, but in the a.m. am going to "try" to get back on board. Am now on the 10mg; not suppressing appetite very well and a bit nauseous.
To all having health issues - prayers are going out for you all. We all have to stick together to get thru all of this. Grandma Jean-ain't them grandkids a hoot!!!!
Good luck to all as the new year begins. (Comment this)

28 - GERI IN CO: Thank you!! I read the blog every day and have for over a year. I've been so grateful for your presence and your welcomes to the new people. So many of the old timers are gone now, although I know Danielle will be back when she can. And I see TimSlim is posting more again now, too. But if not for you, many days, no one would get any replies.
You see, I often have wished to "join in" and post a reply but have hesitated, not wanting to be intrusive. After all, I am a gatherer of information, not a Byetta user. And my knowledge isn't firsthand; it comes from reading the blog from the beginning. That was when I was researching for writing my Byetta book, and that was when I became so attached to everyone on this new adventure. But I didn't want anyone to resent my participation. I didn't think I really had a right to, you know? (Although Danielle did tell me I could be an honorary spitkin!)
But lately I have seen how few people are around, and I felt so sad when questions went unanswered. I kept wishing you would show up some days! So I couldn't resist responding to a few things. It is very nice to know that you don't mind my posting. I remember a lot from the first spitkins, and I have printouts of several weeks of blogs, too. I really would like to post more - and at least welcome people in Danielle's place till she can come back.

{See, Danielle, You are still very missed around here!}

Anyway, Geri, this is a long, round-about way of making contact with you and getting to know you. And, of course, I'm thanking you for your sweet words, too. I will post when I think I have something to add.

(By the way, I'm doing a new book now, for older kids, about diabetes and genes. It is very fascinating but hard-going!)

GRANDMA JEAN: Since I'm breaking the ice here, I am also wishing you Happy New Year and hoping to hear soon how you are!! (Comment this)

29 - Toneylee, I read the blog everyday too, except when I'm out of town so please keep posting and helping when you can. There are questions that I simply cannot answer sometimes so I really do need the help. I didn't even realize that you were not on the spit so you are doing a great job. I'm not very technical minded, more simple, so it would be great if you could give the more complex answers, plus I don't remember things if it doesn't apply to me. When I was gone the first part of Dec. I didn't announce it because that didn't seem right to ask people to not ask questions while I'm gone, I knew someone would respond. I'm glad you and others did.

I know when Dani is back on her feet she will be back. She's got a great positive attitude which will help her recover faster. I miss her too! COME BACK SOON DANI.

I'd like to read your book about the spit. You can get my email from my bio on pg. 2 in the who we are island and give me the title if you want.

Have a great day and keep posting please.

31 - Dorothy, I don't know where Geri is. May I respond? Danielle had a health issue. She is better now, and I know she will return to the blog as soon as she can. We email each other once in a while. Sharicat disappeared after the major blog quake. Remember that? Maybe she just couldn't handle it or got very discouraged. 32 - Toneylee, Thanks for answering. I can only guarentee that I'll be on the blog in the mornings. Sometimes in the evening, like tonight and sometimes during the day when work is slow, but usually only in the am. I'm hoping Dani will be up and at em' soon too. (Comment this)

33 - News from Grandma Jean--after many tests, it was determined that my scar tissue has become entangled with my nerves and surgery would just make it worse. It is degenerative so I now have pain pills to take and will get three epidural cortisone injections as soon as we can schedule it. It would be nice to have something curable for a change. I trust Mayo and will see the dr again in three months. My bs numbers are getting better--halleluja ! Blessing to you all. Grandma Jean

37 - Greetings from Danielle
Hello all my friends and welcome to all our newbies!I have received so many e-mails the last few days from my wonderful cyber friends asking when I will blog again. Also wondering what happened to me.
I will now report to you I had a stroke last year. I have been in therapy rehab since then.It takes all my strenth to focus on getting better. I have little time and energy left when I get home.
Also the blog is difficult for me to handle since the last blog quake. It take patience and time to find the current page. neither of which I have to spare right now.
Geri,Toneylee,Tim and the others blogging are doing a great job. I appreciate all the e-mails,notes and cards asking about my health and when I am coming back. Its hard to say I need help to type at times. And I could not impose on a family member to be here with me all the time
To help me post.I need to say this because so many have written in to ask me if my stroke was byetta related. NO!I have been assured byetta played no role in my stroke. I was under a GREAT deal of stress and still am.My blood pressure was out of control. They are the 2 main facters in my stroke. In your e-mails you also asked about my ability's my speech was affected the most I say I talk like a drunk!! But is improving with speech lessons. My hands and eyes don'nt always get along therefore getting fingers on the keys my eyes see is a task!I apologize for this long post but was concerned when I received so many e-mails asking why I am not on the blog I felt it was time to be honest and let you all in on my health issues.I get stronger every week thanks in part to the wonderful prayers and thoughts from a lot of you my friends!Sharicatmom and Cindylou keep my spirits up on a daily basis. Thanks to them I laugh and smile everyday before I leave for rehab. Geri,Lorraine,Toneylee to name a few special people who have not forgotten me and inquire of my health"Thank You.'My "Old Timers "who started this journey with me way back in Sept05 or shortly after we have had quite a jOurney together. Jim,John,Tim,Ron,Sharrons from the great state of texas Dorthy ,Jane just to name a few miss you guys too. You are a special group of people and we are on a special journey together.
I am still on byetta as you have asked I have lost 58 lbs and are 20 away from my goal! Go gilly go as our beloved Cindy always said.Well this is my story now you all know. Please feel free to keep e-mailing me I appreciate all your thoughts and prayers.
My days of blogging are still not ready for me. But I promise to write a update from time to time.Grandma Jean and Leah and Ann God bless I miss all my cyber friends.
To all our newbies I used to be what some called "The welcomeing Gilly....so may I say "Welcome one and all to the wonderful journey of The Lizard Gilly" may you all have a successful trip on the gilly juice. And find your side effects to be few or non existant.Jim in DC and Tim Slim are our success story and possibly John since he is not posting anymore. Love happiness and especially good health to one and all. I hope I helped in letting you know the answers from all the questions I get from my fellow gillies. PLEASE BE ASSURED "GILLY" HAD NO PART IN MY STROKE!!!!!Much thanks to you all. (Comment this)

38 - DANIELLE: Oh, it's wonderful to see your post! You sound like you are doing great so far - keep up the good work! I imagine it's still a lot of hard work, but your long post proves that things are improving all the time. We all still miss you... {{{{{{{}}}}}}} :) (Comment this)

39 - Hi Gina: In the interest of full disclosure, although I've read every post here since the beginning and diabetes is rampant in my family, I don't have diabetes myself. I am a writer of children's nonfiction books, and I got involved with the blog when I was doing a story on Byetta. I got so attached to everyone that I stayed, and when the blog went through a long, dry period and lost many of its regulars, I started posting sometimes. Luckily none of my new friends objected! Anyway, with that, let me tell you that I understand how lonely diabetes can be and how so often people don't understand or even believe that you have a chronic disease (which happened to one of my family memebers). I am writing a new book about Diabetes now, and I wanted to pass on something I have learned. One cause of type 2 diabetes is environment, yes, like what you eat. But there is a strong genetic component, too - even more than in type 1. Most overweight people are NOT diabetic. And most overweight is the genes, too. This was not your fault, and everyone here knows that. I think there is a strong chance you can get it under control now with byetta. There have been some amazing success stories. You are taking control now, determined to change things, and that is something to give yourself credit for. (And wow, is the byetta working - too well, yes?) I'm sorry your daughter is having such a hard time. Eating disorders are so rampant among the young today. I just want to express my sadness for that, but also my admiration for your strength. Keep up the good work! And people on this blog will really be here for you! (Comment this)

40 - Toneylee, Thank you so much for your support. It really means a lot to me to find others who understand what I am going through. I WILL hang in there and make this work, because, hey - I don't have any other choice!! And you are right - boy does this stuff work. After the 3 day weekend when I got back to school everyone kept saying "WOW, did you have that stomach surgery? You are losing weight so fast!" I just wanted to laugh at the irony of it all!! Thanks again for the support. I have felt very isolated for so long - I can't talk to my family, my mom has heart disease and I don't want to worry her, and my sister has been going through a husband with a brain tumor who just passed away in December, and as previously noted on this forum, my husband just wants to bury his head in the sand and pretend there is no real problem here that I couldn't fix if I tried hard enough on my own. So, find you guys is a real God send. I had reached a true low! Keep in touch! Gina (Comment this)

41 - Gina, Your family has been hit hard lately, hasn't it? I guess this is not the time to tell your mother, or anyone, that diabetes is a serious disease. I could understand downplaying it for her. But we all know it is serious with lifelong and life-shortening complications if it is not treated aggressively. Luckily, you are doing that! I really think it's going to be ok. And won't your husband be surprised when the byetta saves you money when you are able to drop some of those other drugs? You are trying hard and fixing it, but I wish he understood how important it is that you succeed. Maybe he's scared. I'm glad your head is way out of the sand and looking all around! My mom had heart failure and my dad had 2 heart attacks. Which is your mom?

And, yes, I think this is just about the best blog (and community) I've ever seen. Thanks to Dr. Bill! I'm glad you joined us. :) (Comment this)

42 - Gina Rikard,

I second everything that Toney says. Glad you found us. (Comment this)

43 - Toneylee, Well, my mom has congestive heart failure and kidney disease. She had severe endometriosis as a young woman, and when they did her hysterectomy they didn't get all the endometrial tissue and it wrapped around one of her kidneys and damaged it severely. They actually found that AFTER the heart failure - which was misdiagnosed 3 times by ER docs as anxiety attacks/asthma. When they finally found that she was in ICU for 3 weeks before she stabilized enough to get out. The valve is damaged due to some untreated infection at some point in her life and her kidney and congestive failure issues are such that no surgery is really an option. She is not handling my brother-in-laws death very well either. He was 39 and my sister is left with a 9 year old, a 6 year old and a 4 year old who are afraid to go to sleep since dad died in his sleep. So, yeah, we've had a lot going on lately. As a matter of fact my blood sugars and blood pressure both reallly went nuts in the last year - go figure!!!! Since I'm the one everyone else tends to turn to I've been overwhelmed! I know I have to take care of myself too, but some days I do everything right and STILL can't control this! UGH!!! Gina (Comment this)

44 - Oh, Gina, that is so sad for the young family - my heart goes out to them. Listen, I know from the years of caring for my mom that you have to care for youself! Even if it's at midnight when you grab a half hour for yourself. But there are lots of bad days, I know. My mom had congestive heart failure (cardiomyopathy) and failing kidneys from it in the last 2 years. It's really hard. You keep hanging in there and forgiving yourself when you don't do it all exactly right. Here's a hug for you cuz Geri says it's the best medicine. {{{{{}}}}} :) (Comment this)

45 - I don't blog very often but when I do I always look
for the "old familiars" So good to hear from
Danielle and just to let you know, you are in my
prayers for strength and improvement every day of
your life. Thanks for being on the blog when so many of us needed answers and encouragement. Looking forward to seeing you back on a regular basis.
Take care and God Bless.

46 - Teri in Co: Where in Northern Mich are you? Are you in the UP or just near the bridge? My mom and brother still live about 90 miles south of the bridge but my husband is a Upper. We had a cabin on a lake in the UP but sold it since no one has the time to go there anymore. I wish I was on a lake at this time. Nice and relaxing. (Comment this)

47 - geri in Co: Byetta 10,Glucophage XR-1000mg 2xdaily, gluctrol xl 3-2.5 mg daily,

We are in Traverse City, not exactly in town, but at the end of Old Mission Penisula, which splits Grand Traverse Bay. This is kind of a coincidence, we both live in CO now and have Michigan roots too! Geri, just wanted to let you know that I always enjoy reading your posts, they have been very helpful and I look forward to it daily. (Comment this)

I'm from Detroit but my mom and brother now live in Roscommon which is about 90 miles south of the bridge right off of 75. My husband is from the UP and our boys were born up there too. But I'm a troll, below the bridge.lol. We took our whole family and rented a cabin on Houghton Lake 2 years ago and had a great time. We may have to meet half way sometime. (Comment this)

49 - Hi to all the Colorado group. I'm heading out there in a month to visit a cousin in Craig. Plan on doing some sightseeing enroute from Denver. Any suggestions on what "not to miss". I've been there a couple of times but my new "significant other" has not. I lost my husband (heart attack) almost 3 years ago and it's been wonderful to find a new man who shares my interest in travel. You sure have a beautiful state - it's one of my favorite places to visit.

50 - Gail: You found this island already - and I never even noticed! I am posting to you just in case you come over again. Back when the blog was new, a new computer-user named Danielle was thrilled to learn that you could send a cyber-hug. She thought it was the best medicine and so does Geri. So, this is a big hug just for you...
