This is the fifth in a series of discussion forums at Diabetes.Blog.Com, and will be for discussions about Symlin. Thanks, Jerry, for your suggestion.

There have been some posts at the Byetta forum about Symlin that I will reproduce below.

Comments at discussion forums

I just received an interesting e-mail about the discussion forums here at diabetes.blog.com:

I discovered your diabetes blog a few days ago and have visited it several times already. I keep going back to see if anybody has added fresh comments. I would like to offer two suggestions about the blog site:

It would be convenient for repeat visitors if the new messages were placed at the top of the list instead of at the bottom, so that the most recent comments were on the top.

It would also be convenient if the commentor would be more visibly associated with the message. Right now, I can't tell if the person's name belongs to the message above it or below it.

I completely agree with the reader's points (they annoy me also, but sadly this seems to be a feature of the software that www.blog.com uses, that can't be adjusted).

It's a good idea, and I'll write the company and maybe someday they might implement it!

Consumer Report's review of BG monitors

The August 2005 issue of Consumer Reports has a half-page review of meters: Blood-Glucose Monitors -- We found two excellent models. It's on the bottom half of page 9. Their bottom line: "Consider the OneTouch UltraSmart or Ultra."

They include a table of thirteen meters, with name, price, and annual price of strips, together with an "overall score" (ranging from excellent to poor -- 2 meters were considered excellent, and one fair; the rest were in between; none was considered poor).

They also assess test results for consistency, accuracy, and ease of use.
  • Three meters had consistency results of fair and the rest were good to very good.
  • All meters were assessed as either very good or excellent for accuracy.
  • One meter (ReliOn from the Wal-Mart chain of stores) was assessed as poor for ease of use, one was good, and the rest were either very good or excellent.
Find a copy of Consumer Reports to see how your meter stacks up against the competition!

In response to a request from a writer, I've decided to start a series of discussion forums at Diabetes.Blog.Com. This is the first, and will be for discussions about Byetta (exenatide), a new diabetes medication for type 2 diabetes.

Some ground rules:
  1. To share your thoughts, use the "Comments" link immediately below.
  2. Optional: add your e-mail address in the text of your comments if you want people to send you their thoughts. Although the process of posting asks for an e-mail address, that information is not automatically posted. Warning: we cannot be responsible for any solicitations or off-message e-mails you receive, and your e-mail address might be "harvested" by spambots and added to unwanted e-mail lists by nefarious types.
  3. Stay on the topic! All posts are monitored automatically, and any off-topic posts will be mercilessly removed.
I'll plan to add more forums for other topics upon request.
