Exubera (Inhaled Insulin)

This Discussion Forum is for discussion of Exubera, an inhaled insulin product that has been available for use in the US and Europe. Please note, the Diabetes Monitor has had a poll asking whether you might use this product, entitled “Your opinion: what do you think about using inhaled insulin?“.

Note: Exubera was taken off the market by the manufacturer (Pfizer) because of poor sales.

    Emmett Glenn,

  6. cs says:

iT DOES SEEM LIKE THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE USING IT. i JUST NOTICED THE EXPIRATION DATES ON THE LITTLE BLISTERS. DO YOU THINK THAT THE DAY EFFECTS THE OUT COME? DO YOU GET BETTER RESULTS FROM FRESHER ONES. I ALSO NOTICE THAT I DO BETTER IF I CHANGE THE LITTLE CARTRIDGE BEFOR 2 WEEKS.

  7. Giovanni says:

    cs,
Actually I just started using Exubera, I have another week before I change out the release unit, I wonder what they’ll cost.
Maybe there aren’t that many people using it, doesn’t seem like it here, not in the way of feedback.

  8. Bill the diabetesdoc says:

Exubera to be dropped by Pfizer. At the Pfizer website, look for a press release dated Oct 18:

“…we made an important decision regarding Exubera, a product for which we initially had high expectations,” said Jeff Kindler, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “Despite our best efforts, Exubera has failed to gain the acceptance of patients and physicians. We have therefore concluded that further investment in this product is unwarranted.”

“We will work with physicians to transition Exubera patients to other treatment options in the next three months. We remain committed to investing significant resources in the development of new and innovative medicines to manage diabetes, including monitoring inhalation technologies and other innovative delivery systems for insulin and other medicines.”

  9. Giovanni says:

Thanks Bill, just read about it on DiabetesMine, I’m glad they’re admitting the safety issue with the lungs, jeesh, and this stuff was actually working for me, now what!?

  10. Bill the diabetesdoc says:

I have written an essay on Exubera: what went wrong? at my other blog.

  11. Giovanni says:

    Bill the diabetesdoc,
    Good insight, thanks.

  12. cs says:

Does anyone have any idea of what they will do next? I am very disappointed. I was doing well with this drug. Now what?

  13. Laureen says:

Nektar gets back all rights to Exubera, but they don’t manufacture it. They need another partner. I am attempting to get any and all media attention on this horrible incident Pfizer pulled. Send Happy Exubera stories to me at http://www.myspace.com/reen910 or Fight4Exubera@aol.com.

And for teh record. Pfizer said it is not pulling it because of lung problems. Check Exubera.com. They just want to make more $$$..always about money!

  14. Giovanni says:

Laureen, Right on! I’m with you on this.

  15. Al says:

I participated in a 6 month trial of Exubera last September and have continued using it since. My A1C’s have been at 5.9 to 6.1 ever since. It dismays me that Pfizer decided to stop supplying it. I have had T2 for 20 years. Al Reutlinger

  16. cs says:

What are you going to do now. I see the doctor in a couple of weeks and am wondering what is next. We can still get refills for a couple of months so I am wondering if I should get another 3 months worth

  17. Fight4Exubera says:

I can tell you I have launched an international “marketing campaign” to get teh word out about the Happy Exubera users. My hopw is the media takes this and runs with it, so another company picks up the plant in IN and continues to produce it. I also know a new, smaller inhaler was scheduled to come out in January. It is the size of a cell phone. Blast your news medias and blogs with happy stories. Exubera needs the good publicity from those of us who love it.

  18. Fight4Exubera says:

    CS-

I just refilled my 3 month supply and plan to refill again as soon as the pharmacy allows me to. Pfizer will be producing Exubera through Jan. Hopefully another co will pick it up before then, but who know.

  19. WendyM says:

    Bill the diabetesdoc,
I am at my wit’s end! I use Exubera. I can’t use the liquid insulins due to being allergic to metacresol, the preservative in all of them, from Lantus to pork. My Endocrine Doc, Allergist, Family Doc and I have tried all other options. Without it I have 400+ fasting blood sugar results. I am on Metformin and glyburide. Any ideas? If I could lose 100 pds. I would be underweight but then my insulin need may diminish. I did Atkins for 2 years and did well blood sugar, triglyceride-wise, but only lost 25 pounds.

I have contacted Pfizer and Nektar, the companies that make and market Exubera.
    Any ideas?

  20. WendyM says:

    Fight4Exubera,
Thanks for fighting! What can I do to help? I am allergic to liquid insulins. Without Exubera I will die. My FBS were running 400+ before I went on Exubera, after years of trying every other option.
    Thanks!

  21. Giovanni says:

    Fight4Exubera,
Any progress on this so far?
    John

I have been on exubera for a year now. I was the first one on it in my doctor’s office. It has to be the easiest thing to use! No rocket science involved! After taking shots for 30 + years, it is a god send. I take one shot in the morning then use exubera before each meal. How they have the nerve to say there is other blood sugar lowering medication is a crock. Type I and II diabetes is different. After all these years something finally comes out to lend some relief to a diabetic and to now take it off the shelves because not enough people even know about it let alone buy it is such crap. Being after money instead of patients well being… well that’s wrong on so many levels! I wish there was someplace to protest this all further.

  23. Richard says:

Anybody actually trying the glucotor-2? Is this stuff a scam or does it work at lowering bs and a1c?
