Odds’n'Ends
This Discussion Forum is for almost any other diabetes-related topics that aren’t covered by our existing Discussion Forums. I don’t want stuff that’s not related to diabetes, but just about any diabetes topic that’s not covered by the other Discussion Forums will be okay here.
This is the 2nd Discussion Forum dedicated to this subject, and is a continuation of the previous forum on this subject. It was started on October 24, 2006, after what we call a “blogquake” happened — namely, the software underlying this blog became unstable and shook everybody up!
Notices to our new readers:
1) Inappropriate comments (for example, “I love vitamin Z — it made my blood sugar miraculously return to normal”) will be deleted without warning.
2) Also, the folks who are regular readers and writers about the new diabetes drug Byetta have developed all sorts of strange terms that you’ll gradually come to know, including “lizard spit”, “gillyspitkins”, “lizard of Az”, “yellow spit road”, “little brother” and “big brother”, “hug island”, and lots more. I think I’ll dedicate a new Discussion Forum soon to all this new lingo…
3) Finally, you can still read many of the earlier comments, and search for information throughout those forums, by using your webbrowser’s FIND or SEARCH feature while at the earlier forums, or by searching at the advanced search feature that is at the Diabetes Monitor.
As of June 1, 2008, the ability to post new comments at the Discussion Forums at Diabetes.Blog.com has been disabled. The old comments will remain available for you to read.

I can finally bend my knee 90 degrees and now I’m able to use the pool to exercise as well as bands to start some more quad strengthening. Pain is letting up but I still will start to ache if I forget to take my pain meds at least 2 times per day.
The pharmacy took the byetta pen back because it was open when I got it. It was their mistake, not mine. I also noticed the expiration date is 9/08 on this pen, only a mere 6 mos from now. I’m use to atleast 1 year with the 10 pens, but it seems to be working well. I’m probably changing pharmacies because the other one in the grocery store is now offering $4.00 prescriptions on generics. Perfect timing, just wish Byetta was one of those $4 ones.
Hope things are going well for you now. Are they?
For Dr. Bill’s thoughts about gastric banding and diabetes, look at this blog article:
Gastric banding for diabetes.
geri,
I rarely go to the forum anymore because most of the time I can not post anything. I just error out. I still browse occassionally to see what is being said. I am glad you are doing better and that the pharmacy did take back the pens. For replacements due to problems I usually have to go to the manufacturer and not the pharmacist.
I am trying to get my blood pressure under control right now but am reacting to the medications. They have sent me to a bp specialist. She stopped my lisinopril because she felt it was not working. I have to be off it for one week before I can start the new medication cozaar. The week ends tomorrow. I will go in for more bloodwork tomorrow and then can start the new meds and go back in another week to the specialist.
I have been doing quite a bit of posting on sparkpeople.com which has a pretty good diabetes group for those of us over 50 and needing to loose more than 50 pounds. But alas they are not as knowledgable about diabetes as my friends here.
Well it looks like this might make it thru today.

Just checking on how your new bp med is doing. Any success yet? I sure hope so.
I’m not sure when this is going to happen but I will need a revision of my total knee replacement. In other words, they need to do it overagain because they needed to put in the deluxe model in, not the standard model. It all goes back to my knee not being “virgin” and my ligaments are shot. I’m getting a second opinion on May 15 so it will be sometime after that. I’m not too happy about this especially since I was given this possibility just 10 weeks after surgery.
I’ve been having problems posting too but things seem to be doing fine today.
geri in co:Byetta 10(3.06), Glucophage XR, Glucotrol XL, Geri, I can’t believe you might have to go through the knee replacement surgery and rehab all over again. Why wasn’t the correct part used when you had the surgery? I know you must be pretty angry about this turn of events.
My son is a lawyer and during his college days he worked summers at a products liability law firm.
I remember him telling me that someone who had knee replacement surgery sued a manufacturer because of a defective implanted part and it turned out the hospital didn’t know which manufacturer’s implant was used because they had several ones ready for use in the operating room. Why they didn’t know which was used seems rather odd but I guess that way all the manufactuer’s had to share in the award to the patient if there was one. There were problems with hip replacement parts too.
I’m not suggesting you have a defective part but I do know that there are problems with anything and everything that goes into our bodies. It’s kind of a sad commentary on things.

I’m hoping that this area is still monitored because I really need help! In January my doc started me on Levimer (sp) at night – and I’m up to 46 units now – and Apidra on a sliding scale before meals. I also take metformin (1000mg 2x) and amaryl (4 mg 1x). I had been losing weight slowly – 22 lbs last year. Losing slowly is best for me so that it stays off.
Since starting the Apidra snd Levimer I’ve gained 12 lbs!! I’m getting really frustrated! My sugar levels are better than they ever have been; my A1C after 3 months dropped from 8.2 to 7.4; and I’m finally sleeping and feeling better. I’m exercising 3-4 days a week consistently and am still gaining weight!
Can it be the apidra or levimer or a combination? How do I overcome this??
Thanks -
Michelle
We’re still here at Diabetes.Blog.com, although it looks like folks got discouraged when it was unusable for a few days earlier this week.
The weight gain is a problem for many people on insulin. It’s not one insulin or the other: just insulin itself. As you might now realize, insulin really is a “Storage Hormone” — that is, it stores away any unused sugar as — FAT.
So it becomes critical to watch your food intake extraordinarily closely, and to remain as active as possible.
BTW, the metformin is probably helping control your weight, so it should probably be retained at least for the time being. Ask about dropping the Amaryl; it’s alledgedly weight-neutral, but probably of minimal help since all it does is release internal insulin from your beta cells.
Hope this helps!
