Reply to a reader

Irecently received an extremely thoughtful and detailed e-mail from a reader, expressing concerns after I apparently deleted a comment she had written. I spent a fair amount of time formulating my reply, and thinking it all over, I have decided that there was nothing personal in the issues she raised that I couldn't let everyone see my responses. So, here they are:

Thanks for writing and sharing.

I must say I really don't recall whatever might have been deleted, so I'm at a total loss to explain what happened.

Now some comments back to your concerns:

First of all, I NEVER choose what to delete or edit based on any considerations of who might have posted it.

Second, I do this whole thing in addition to my "day job" and I sometimes don't get to look at blog comments for a day or more, so my mood about what to let stay varies, depending on how late it is, and how many hundreds of comments I'm reading!

Third, it's very cumbersome to delete from one forum and post the comment to another; there's simply no easy way to do it.

Fourth, IF I have an e-mail address, I'll usually notify the writer that the comment had been deleted, and if it belongs elsewhere, encourage them to post elsewhere.

Next, IF I don't have an e-mail address, I'm much more likely to delete the comment. By the way, your recent comment again does not include your e-mail address; please add it to future comments -- it's the easiest way for me to write back to you if I want to contact you. I get hundreds of e-mails a day, and really can't save all of them and sorting through the thousands I have retained is sometimes difficult.

With respect to shorting Byetta stock, the Byetta Board at Yahoo! indicates that there are some people who would make a financial killing if they were somehow to post misleading information on a blog or elsewhere and succeed in driving the share price down. I am very concerned about imposters, and one of the main ways imposters behave is to not give any e-mail address (or a phony one). So any time I find a comment from someone who won't give me their e-mail address, I'm worried. I clearly spell out on every Discussion Forum that an e-mail address is mandatory.

Finally, I don't mind off-topic comments most of the time, and have frequently warned people with the following message (that I have as "boilerplate" on my computer):

[NOTE: This comment is off-topic, and should have been posted elsewhere. I will let it stay, but in the future, if you want to discuss, post a brief comment here to tell folks that the followup will be elsewhere. Thanks!
Bill the diabetes doc.]

So, in any case, please continue to participate, but please please please also be sure that you enclose your e-mail address on the submission form every time (if you haven't already done so, it'll be easier if you check the box on that form so the information will "stick" for the next time!)

Best wishes,
Bill
