Januvia and Galvus
Galvus is a similar medication, and would compete directly with Januvia. Galvus was initially assumed to be approved by the FDA shortly after Januvia was approved, but the FDA asked for additional safety data: see Upcoming Diabetes Medications: vildagliptin (at the Diabetes Monitor). Galvus is approved in Europe and other countries.

Rhonda, I started Januvia and few months back to help the Metformin – My A1C has always been very good but a little harder to control lately. I noticed after a few weeks that my hunger was increasing and now it is out of control. I have gained 10 pounds. I was on Prozac many, many years ago and the doc told me it would curb my hunger – Did not, just the opposite and later studies showed that I was not the only one with this reverse effect. I will be willing to bet we find this out in the future about Jenuvia? I wonder
Jay,how do you take these and what amounts or do you take januvia and byetta together at one time i dont know what kind of schedual i should be on i am also taking byetta and januvia just started
I have a general question. if anyone can help. I’ve switched so much now, between Avandia and Actose (which I want to quit ASAP). I have brand new bottles of 3 month supplies of Avandia and Actose. I of course can’t return them to my Merck-Medco, can I donate them any way? Thanks opheliafl@yahoo.com
I started Januvia4 months ago, have had no side effects, and have lost about 25 lbs. It’s working good for me,
M. A. Mitchell, D.O.,I am not going to cry for the MD’s yet. They make a decent income. In fact anyone in the medical field makes a very very decent income. And yes Dr’s do push the latest and greatest that the last detail man/woman left. Dr’s are hypocrites, they complain about all of the bureaucracy they have to deal with but except for a few they are doing nothing to fight the insurance companies. We need to get rid of the Insurance companies and have a single payer system.

I am very disappointed with Januvia. I found out about it in mid-2007 and my doctor agreed it was OK to give it a try. I had been diagnosed Type II NIDDM in 1997 and have been taking Metformin 1000 MG twice daily and Actos 45 MG daily. I thought Januvia might possibly allow me to reduce my dosage of Metformin and Actos, but it didn’t work out. After the first day, I began to feel weakness in my outer extremities, especially my legs. It kind of felt like low blood sugar, but my glucose tests didn’t verify that. We started with 100 MG of Januvia, and then we reduced it to 50 MG after about a month. The weird side effects continued, and I also gained 14 pounds in 3 months! At that point I gave up and DC’ed the Januvia. I would like to talk to the experts at Merck about this, but there doesn’t seem to be any way for an ordinary patient like me to get an audience with them. [I have a doctorate, but it's not in a medical field.] So, at least as far as I’m concerned, Merck has a useless drug on its hands. Hopefuly it has helped somebody! Any comments, productive suggestions, or encouragement would be much appreciated.
Flyer0527: Have you looked into Byetta?
Hi, A while back I posted here when my doctor put me on Januvia and at that time I had some question as to whether anyone else developed stuffiness and a sore throat while taking it..I eventually had to stop it because of these side effects..
About a month ago my doctor put me on Janumet, Januvia/metformin combo and I have not had any problems with it..I noticed so far I have lost about 5 lbs which I am happy for and my BS has been very good..
I guess my question is this has anyone suffered any leg pains while taking diabetes medication?..Not the new one I mentioned but it seems to me that when I started taking Actos, my leg pains began..Has anyone had this problem? I no longer take Actos but the leg pains continue…I appreciate any advice you can give me..Thanks in advance..

Listen, if you are having side-effects with Januvia tell your doctor!!!! If this drug is harming people it needs to be pulled from the market. BTW, if you haven’t reached your BG target after 2-3 months then you are wasting your time and money and hurting your health with this drug, or any other drug for that matter. Get your sugars under control and don’t add meds with weird side effects–tell the doc and the FDA!!!!! Merck has had trouble with Vioxx and Vytorin–do you think they care about you???
Babe, I just started taking Januvia and right away i started wheezing and coughing and it is something I hv never done before. It is really scaring me…..I do not feel sick but just hv this stuff in my chest.
Hello, I am 26 and was diagnosed with DM2 when I was 22 years old. Last March, I went to my doctor complaining about my recent weight gain which I couldn’t control despite the fact that I watch what I eat, I don’t really eat much, and I exercise. Then, I was taking metformin HCL, 500mg daily to be taken after breakfast (500mg only since I am strict with my diet and exercise and so far it is still manageable). Because of my complaints, my endo prescribed Januvia explaining this would help me lose weight being an appetite suppressant as well. My starting dose was 50mg Januvia (breakfast). Although she wants to put me on the full 100mg dose, she wanted me to introduce it to my system slowly so that I could adjust to it seeing my glucose level and everything else has been (and is still) maintained. Later that week, my OB told me I had PCOS and it’s the reason for my weight gain and so my metformin was raised from 500 to 1500 mg daily (500mg x meal).
I have already adjusted to the Metformin side-effects.
With the addition of the new medication, I experienced really strong headaches, which thankfully went away after one week, but only to be replaced with sore throat and runny nose which I had for the next two weeks. When I lost the sore throat and the runny nose, I started to feel nauseous all the time, especially when it came to food. I developed an aversion to the smell of food, and now I cannot even think of food without feeling queasy. The only time I can eat well is during breakfast, before I take the Januvia. I lost 4 pounds in less than one month without trying. I thought by now, I shouldn’t be developing anymore side effects, right? But lately, I cannot sleep well. I have difficulty falling asleep or returning back to sleep. I would be awake for hours. Till taking a toll on me. Now, I am always tired and my body clock is messed up.
I want to know if the insomnia is due to Januvia.
PS. I am scared to know what would happen when my endo finally puts me on full dose.

I know Januvia isn’t suppose to effec the liver, but before I started on Januvia my AST and ALt were at 20 each. After 3 months of Januvia along with metformin, my AST and ALT continued to rise. Dr. took me off of metformin, but AST and ALT still rose. One year later after being on Januvia my counts are now AST – 98 and ALT- 185. I had a sonagram done of my liver and it
showed I had fatty infiltration of the liver. Also, since on januvia my LDL is now 179, Triglycerides went from 99 up to 154, total cholestrol went from 182 and is now 255. My primary doctor thinks I should go on meds for cholestrol, the endo doctor agrees but wants to wait and see if in the next 3 months these liver counts either level out or start to lower, and the gastro doctor told me to lose weight! If I wasn’t on these meds I would lose weight…I exercise alot, I work in a gym! I eat about 1000 to 1200 calories per day. Actually before I went on the januvia I was on actos and put on alot of weight from that. Then went on the januvia and metformin and lose 15 pounds. Went off the metformin and put on 6 pounds. So what I am doing is taking myself off of Januvia,(been 2 days since my last dose) taking metformin 2x a day and taking prandin as needed. I have a blood test in a monthand am a nxious to see if these counts change for the better. By the way my bs have been great! I always have a high morning reading but with or without meds it will drop to any where between 125 and 90 according to how much I exercised that day. My A1c has flucuated between 6.7 highest and 6.3 lowest.
Have you heard of anyone else with this liver problem associated with the Januvia. I would appreciate feedback.
Carla,
i have had manyof the same side effects, but didn’t realize it was from the Januvia; especially the coughing and sore throat. Also, I’ve been having a lot of difficulty sleeping; thought it was just a side effect of menopause. Now I am really starting to wonder if it is the Januvia. I did not take the januvia today and am real interested to see in the next few days or weeks if the cough goes away and now the insomnia.
sherry,
I’d like to know what would happen as well. Tell me?
There were times I was so desperate to get a good night’s sleep that I seriously considered taking sleeping pills. The only thing that stops me is, the number of meds I am taking already.
LarryL,I too had those same side effects stuffiness, coughing and wheezing from Januvia, that is why I told my MD that I wanted to stop taking it..He agreed..Lord know we have enough of things to deal with without adding more..Babe
