Again…Thank-you! She takes Actos once a day. I have not met this NEW doctor, but I am about to. Mom lives 4 hours from me on a farm in Saskatchewan. I am going there tomorrow to help her with her meals, she is afraid to eat.
We also have a doctor in the family, I called her yesterday. My mom looks to me for the answers. I am reading about diabetes all the time…near tears of frustration, then I found this Blog. Thank-you to everyone who has wrote information … been very helpful to this Newbie! Until a year ago I never even new what carbs did to the body, let alone knowing about Metformin and Actos! This blog has been very helpful.
Margaret, happy to help. You sound like you are in the same spot I am. My mother doctor shopped. When a doctor wouldn’t tell her what she wanted to hear she would find one that would. When she ended up in the hospital due to drug reaction that is when I stepped in and fired her Doc and found one we both liked and I could trust. It is no fun I tell you. My mother has been a diabetic for 29 years and I am constantly surprised at how little she knows. I have learned more about heart conditions and treatments and what I have seen with diabetes in older patients gives me plenty of motivation to manage mine now to prevent future issues.
I bought my mother a house about 4 years ago and moved her to Florida about 11 miles from me and I go every Monday and do all her medicine for the week and also go to every doctor visit with her. I have an older brother and sister, but like you she turns to me.
The biggest challenge I have with her is getting her to eat right. Like your mother I have had many talks about how important it is to eat right, but still fighting that battle. My mother is so independent and quickly losing her independence, and not dealing with it well.
Good luck with the Actos and do hesitate to ask if you have questions. Don’t visit this forum much but hang out in the Byetta forum. Take Care and good luck!
Margaret: If I understand your comment about confusing numbers correctly, you need to go here:
Converter.
We measure BGs differently than Canada and Europe (and the world!). This converter should make our numbers in mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter) make sense to you in mmol/L (millimoles per liter).
toneylee in va, aren’t you the smart one! I missed that completely. Should have been a give away since I noticed her meds were a different dose and she did mention where her Mom was. Great catch!
Thank-you…I was wondering what was going on.
Am I doing this correctly.. 14 mmol/L = 252mg/dl ?? Because my moms numbers are at this time any where from 12 to 18 right now. I am thinking this is really not good? She was down to 7 to 10 and then the doctor gave her the wrong meds, the metformin was way lower and now we can not get her back on track. The morning starts to high. OK … I am feeling sick to my stomach! Afraid for her. I read in the exercise area that someone exercises before breakfast and meds? Mom is going to try this starting Monday. We moved the morning Actos to supper time. If the morning number would just start lower she would be ok with the after meal numbers.
Margaret: That’s right. Yes, of course, those numbers are way too high, but I don’t think this is exactly an Actos question. I am feeling like it is a general managing diabetes question, when everything is so new and confusing. Meds, exercise, diet, testing–it’s pretty overwhelming. But nobody should be scared to eat! May I recommend just a book to learn more and make things seem more encouraging? I like “Diabetes for Dummies” by Alan L. Rubin. Try to get the latest edition. It will not make you sick with fear; it will help you relax and learn what to do.
toneylee in va,
Thank-you, I have about a 1/2 a dozen books on the go. All the reading I can do the better. Chapters discount card comes in handy.
Good news this morning…read about the 20 min excercise instead of 30 min. It worked, moms numbers went down from 18.7 to 16.4. I know this is still extremely high, but it is a start. Tomorrow morning 20 min excercise – 10 min rest – 20 min excercise.
Has anyone taken Actos at supper time?
Thanks..

Steve in FL, Byetta10x2, Metformin1000x2, No More Actos!, Hey Steve. How long did it take for the edema of your feet and legs to go away?? I have been on actos for 2 yrs. (since diagnosed–type 2) The past year the edema gradually worsened and last week I fianally told my endo. that I was not taking it anymore. He put me on Januvia 50 mg. and so far my nos. are fine. My A1C stays between 5.8–6.2. Still have some edema after a week.
