Thank you Dr.Bill Since I am the first to post on this subject of Neuropathy I will tell you my e
xperience with Neuropathy. I have some sort of numbness in my legs for years from back surgeries. Since I have diabetes for the last 3 yrs the numbness has gotten a lot worse. Jabbing pain and the numb feeling goes up to my thighs. I had an emg test on my feet and legs. The endo doctor said it is caused both from my surgeries and the diabetes. My confusion is that my bs numbers are mostly under 110. I take Byetta & metformin er x 1, and gabapentin for the neuropathy. I don’t feel the gabapentin is helping me. Anyone have any suggestins.
Olboy41,Thank You,I will try the aspercream or the bengay. Has your doctor given you any medication? I would like to know your herbal remedy. Maybe it can help me. I get pain, numbness & cramps every day. Thanks again.
Helen NV., I don’t have neuropathy but there are several people who do that go to the diabetes support group meeting that I go to and one lady had to try several different meds to finally get results. You may need to try one of the other meds to see if they will help. Fingers are crossed that one will work well for you. I think it was the oldest med available that worked for her not the newer ones that the drs want to try first.
geri in co:Byetta 10(3.06), Glucophage XR, Glucotrol XL,thanks gerie. I have to 2 different doctors with out any help. I just joined a neourophty group. They meet once a week I haven’t been to any meetings yet,but I plan to go to there meetings. If you can find out what your friend takes,I could talk to my doctor about that.
Helen NV., My doctor had to up my Gabapentin dramatically. He said some people can get by on maybe 300mg a day, while some have to take 3600. I think I started at 600mg and he upped mine last week to 1800mg, which he said is about the average dosage.
I’m glad I found this discussion group because I’ve really been struggling with neuropathy for the past two years. In fact, I had to diagnose myself.
radioactive, Do You feel better with the 1800 dose a day. How often and what dose do you take each time. What are your symtoms? Thanks for your help.
I have having problems because of what I am told is neuropathy. I am sure what forms neuropathy takes. My symtoms are different. Certainly not the feet on cactus which I have seen in two of the popular news mags. In the cold months my feet are numb and always feel cold. Sometimes I get cramps especially while driving. I wear two pairs of socks in the fall and winter. In the summer it goes away. I am taking 75 mg of Lyrica twice a day. It seemed to help in the beginning. I can not notice the difference when I forget to take it. My blood flow is fine. I have type two diebeties according to my family doctor. Any one else have this malady? Joe in Lawville Mar 14, 08
Joe: You sound like a friend of mine who has Raynaud’s syndrome. Have you discussed it with your doctor and gotten a specific diagnosis about what is causing the neuropathy? What diabetes meds are you on? I ask because some people on the Byetta forum have reported that their neuropathy improved or went away when they went on Byetta.
Joe, I HAVE WHAT THEY CALL PERIFIAL NEUROPATHY. I HAVE COLD NUMB FEET ALL THE TIME. SOME I FEEL NUMBNESS UP TO MY KNEES. I AM GABIPENTIN. I AM GOING TO SEE MY PAIN MANAGEMENT DOCTOR ON FRIDAY. I ALSO DIDN’T MENTION I ALSO HAVE PAIN IN MY FEET AND LEGS. I WILL LET YOU KNOW WHAT HE HAS TO SAY. I HAVE HAD 6 BACK SURGERYS AND THAT MAY ADD TO THE NUMBNESS AND PAIN.
Hi Helen,
You might want to check into the possibility that Byetta is causing your problems. Go off of it for a while and see if your symptoms improve.
I was on Byetta, 10mcg twice a day, for a couple of years before I discovered that it was causing my secondary Raynaud’s symptoms.
I strongly recommend you work with your diabetes specialist to ensure that your blood-sugar stays in the healthy range as you go off of the Byetta.
It took about a month to get the Byetta out of my system, but I’m so glad to be normal again! No more super-sensitivity to cold in my hands and feet!
I’ll gladly find another way to control my diabetes, even if it means multiple daily insulin injections!
I hope this helps!
