My Diabetes (day 52)

It's now approaching 2 months since I was diagnosed as having the Big D. My BGs continue mostly in the 80's to low100's (lowest to date 55, highest 293 -- and that was the very first time I ever checked). Checking my BGL about 6 or more times/day, including checking before driving every time, and giving myself shots about 5 -6 times/day. Got my updated MedicAlert dogtags with the words "diabetes, taking insulin" on it.

Had my recheck with my endo (and found out what the lab tests showed). The lab was supposed to send them directly to me, but I got the results from my endo before I got them from the lab -- by 1/2 day (the results were awaiting me at home the same evening I got them from my endo!). A1c down to 8.3 (had been 11.1 a month earlier). Antibodies negative, and C-peptide at lower limit of normal (0.8). Lab did only the "routine" antibody test, but I guess I'll just leave my diagnosis as "either Type 2 or maybe LADA".

Most astonishing (!) recent discovery: 1 bagel with cream cheese is more than sufficient (!) to treat a low...

To date, I have not used alcohol to swab the skin for either shots or fingersticks. Also, have reused the same needle on the insulin pen for every shot each day (3-4 shots per day), then replaced for the next day. And reused lancet for entire's day fingerpoking then replace for next day. And I'm still alive and uninfected...

Oh, and about 80% of shots are given through the clothing (shirt/undershirt). All shots to date in belly. And yes, I do have a few bruises (I'm on aspirin for its heart/stroke protection).

3 - Bill:

I am 6 ft and weigh 178 with 17% body fat. One bagel will sky rocket my BS and not soon enough to treat a low. Be careful treating a low that way. I would either be liver dumping or passed out befor the bagel would increase my BS. The startch causes a big BS increase; lots of carbs in a bagel. My last A1C was 5.9.

4 - Kirk: I completely agree with what you say; I was being somewhat facetious in my discussion above.
Sadly, my brain malfunctioned while low, and said "eat something" and the closest something I saw was a table full of goodies. And in my shirt pocket was some pure glucose that I keep there for emergencies -- I simply forgot it was there... It's part of the craziness that accompanies lows... (Comment this)

5 - Dr Bill
Can you provide me/us information or links to information about basal/bolus insulin use? I'm curious how you do it, what kind of insulin you use, etc.
Thanks,

6 - Barbara J: Start at flexible insulin programs at the Diabetes Monitor, and discuss with your doctor.

The basal insulin nowadays is usually Lantus, given in one or two daily doses; the boluses are any of the following three rapid-acting analogs: Humalog, Novolog, or Apidra.

Hope this helps! (Comment this)

7 - Thanks, Dr Bill - it's just what the doctor ordered (yuk, yuk, yuk, I couldn't resist!) I have always told my doc a big fat NO to the "I" word, but after learning more, I'm intrigued by Lantus, esp since I seem to have dawn phenom.

8 - Bill:

One of the hardest issues for newly diagnosed is to take some carbs and wait. It is too easy to consume everything in site; learned the hard way many years ago.

How old will you be when you been D for 50 years.

All those shots and still not leaking!!! (Comment this)

9 - good for you doing multiple shots & multiple tests!
I still do the multiple tests 6+ a day but shots got annoying after a few months. I snack alot & to shoot humalog every few hours was too much so about 6 months after diagnosed I got me a pump. Best thing ever!
Its now been 5.5 years 5 of which on a pump. Never been to the hospital. Hba1c has been consistently good. I eat when I want what I want. I do what I want when I want. I live a pre-diabetic life.
Go get a pump. You''ll be glad you did.
Kinda like tivo, how''d I live without this?
mimimed is my choice. (Comment this)

My son changes the lancet when we change the clocks ;-), 2x per year. Or, if he can''t draw blood on the 20th poke.
He too is thankfully still alive and uninfected. (p.s. it''s simply not a battle I will fight. He checks bg 6-8x per day, albeit with a very dull lancet).
