1 - my dad has just started taking Byetta and it seems to help. he is 8o and very heavy and has lost weight. the problem for us is the VA does not carry this yet and my dad is only on Medicare. he has no other insurance and we now cannot afford regular prescriptions so we use the VA. does anyone have similar issues and what have you been able to find, such as help in paying for this. please contact me at mcohen(at) brother.com

4 - Good Morning, John, Cindylou, Shari, Warren, Peggy T, Beth, Danielle, EVERYONE...

I want to start off by saying,
I haven't taken the Gilly since Friday...
This flu has been really bad..
A lot of phlem and stuff going to my stomach has really upset it a lot.
So I have been on nothing but insulin since Saturday Morning.

John you posted a comment to someone about rushing to the 10 if the 5 was working..
You made the comment that the whole purpose of the Byetta is to take LESS MEDS in time...
I agree with you on that 100%...

So I am upset with my Dr for putting me on the 10mcg..
I thought that I was doing pretty good on the 5mcg.
My body was doing well with that dosage.
My sugars were a little high at times (DAWN)... But that has always been a problem for me... Even with the insulin.

Now that I am on the 10mcg EVERYTHING taste SALTY now..
Even WATER. I get a really bitter taste in my mouth..

I am thinking about taking only ONE SHOT a day until my body can adjust to the 10mcg.
I don't get as sick to my stomach when I do the morning shot...
But the evening shot is really bad...

My question is this,
IF I do the one shot a day, Will my body eventually adjust to that enough to let me start doing the 2x's a day?

I really want this to work out for me...
But is seems like my bg was doing better with the 5mcg.
I started seeing higher numbers when I went to the 10.
On the good side, I have lost 12 pounds since Feb 27th..

Thanks For Listening Everyone!

Sharon

7 - I was on vacation and unable to take my Byetta as it became cloudy while in South America. I came home yesterday and took my two shots and have big red places at site of shot. I am wondering if I need to stop the shots today. The area is itching all the time. (Comment this)

8 - Danielle,
My Husband is doing much better now..
He was put on Lantus at bedtime..
His numbers are coming down gradually...
He is NOT on the Byetta though.

Me on the other hand has a nasty cold are sinus infection going on..
It has been 9 days now since all of this crud started.
That is why I decided to give the Gilly a break for a few days to see if I can get this thing under control..

Then I think I will just ease back into the Gilly by doing one shot a day and one shot of insulin...

I think it is just going to take time for me to adjust to the new dose...

Have A Very Good Day!

9 - mike cohen, Lilly/Amylin has a patient assistance program. I think they'll help your father get insurance coverage, or provide Byetta at a reduced cost. Check out the web site: www.byetta.com.

I had a wierd experience yesterday evening. I was out and exercising rather strenuously during the late afternoon -- working horses, cleaning barn. My bg went way up, much to my surprise. I checked it before dinner, thinking I must have gone low, and it was 167. I made dinner, and then took my shot, and ate right away. An hour later, I could tell I was going low, and when I checked it was 70. A drop of 100 points in an hour!

I've never had that reaction to exercise before, but I think I'll be checking the bg before injecting in the evenings from now on.

12 - WELTS
Brenda J.--Don't feel that you have to stop the shots because of the welts. It is a common side effect for some of us, but finally goes away. Rub cortizone cream or ointment on the welt to stop the itching. Also, be sure to rotate the injection sites. I had a welt as big as a quarter because I was injecting near the same place all the time before I knew better. There is an injection routine listed at the beginning of one of the previous blogs which helps reduce the amount of Byetta that gets on the skin which might help. Counting to ten seconds(not five as recommended in the demonstration video from Amylin also can help). For me the welts only lasted a couple of weeks. Good luck. (Comment this)

You need to stop using the pen and contact the Byetta Hotline:

Sharon, re: Salty Taste

I think you should take another shot at your doctor about switching to the 5-Pen.

14 - I just wanted to share my experiences from the last week. Last weekend, I stopped using any insulin and am now using Byetta alone. This is from using 45u Lantus nightly and 15+units of Novalog with meals in December when I started Byetta. Every time I tested, I expected to see numbers I didn't want to see. But it never happened. I was being really cautious with carbs. About 15-20 for breakfast and lunch and 25-35 at dinner. My numbers ranged from 80's in the afternoon before dinner to about 117 after eating. Well, last night I dared the lizard to a pizza duel. The lizard won!! I had two slices of a small pizza and a fairly good sized salad with a bunch of vegies and 2 hours later, I had a 99 and at three hours, a 127. And my fbs this morning was still only a 114. Long live the lizard!! Pat in ID (Comment this)

16 - The pizza tastes even better in hindsight knowing it didn't cause my bg to go out of control. The rest of it is in my refrigerator for meals later this week. One other thing, I've now lost about 35 pounds. My weight loss had stalled out, but I suspect low carb foods were the problem. Most of them are not low calorie as well. It is just too easy for me to eat more than I should of something just because I can. For the most part, I am staying away from the goodie variety of low carb stuff. I do use a fair amount of low carb entree's of various sorts, but not other things. Pat in ID (Comment this)

17 - Advice on skin reaction? I'm new to Byetta (began on 5mcg Monday evening) and I had absolutely NO instruction on injecting it (I believe I may be being punished for requesting Byetta, which they did not want to give me). So I'm self taught (thank heavens for the internet), and I've tried the injection technique listed at the top of last week's forum, but I'm still getting pain at the injection sites -- not during the injection but for days afterward (I'm still feeling that first site from Monday). It's not awful, they're like tiny "sparks" of pain that only occur occasionally and are fleeting, but it's definitely noticeable and, of course, the more injections I have the more opportunities for the little "sparks." It's worse if my waistband touches the site. They are not painful to touch, but are a bit red right at the sites. I pretty much expected the sites to be invisible after the injections.

Otherwise things are going well, my blood sugars are low and other side effects are minimal -- the nausea is vague and easily tolerable. I haven't had quite the degree of early satiety others have reported, which I really looked forward to, but my appetite is down -- I had to force myself to eat yesterday. No idea about weight loss, but I expect I'm losing.

Anyway, any advice on the skin thing would be appreciated. (Comment this)

19 - This blog has given more knowledge than most doctors have. I started on the 5 MCG February 20 also on 2,500 glucophage, 6 mg amaryl the Dr. DC'd 8 Mg Avandia when I started the spit. I had no side affects luckily, my #'s have been great other then fasting AM which are mostly 135+. I had a problem after lunch 2 hrs. later I was up to 200, so, on my month after appoinment I asked my Dr. if I could do another 5mcg. injection before lunch rather than chang to the 10 which I thought was not necessary because 2 hrs. after breakfast and the same after dinner I was down to the 100 range. He said he does not see why not, although it is not labeled for 3 a day and my insurence will probably not pay for the 3rd shot. He did give me a sample pen that will hold me for the next 2 months of the lunch shot. I started the 3rd shot on March 20 and have not felt better evre since I was diagnosed 13 years ago at age 40. I lost 13 lbs in the past 6 weeks since i'm on the spit, weekends slow down my weight loss a bit. I can't wait for the long term Byetta which they are testing now for once a month (I believe) I don't mind twice a month if it works as I'm doing 3 times a day and feel great. To all you regulars on this blog you are fantastic to help all of us as you are doing. I'm a good reader but hate to write. Good luck to all of you and thank you... (Comment this)

20 - My doctor looked at the remarkable numbers I am having
with the 5 mcg and refused to let me move up to the 10 mcg.
He says that I don't need it. I have not lost much weight
(maybe a couple of pounds) in about 3 weeks on the 5 mcg
but my numbers are better. I am having no trouble tolerating
the injections.

Do I NEED to go the 10mcg to see better numbers or more
weight loss ? Has anyone remained on the 5 mcg for longer
than a few months ?

Thanks

22 - Wolf, re: 3 Spits a Day

Although the drug trials for Byetta didn't do 3 a days I don't see any problem so long as there's always a meal following each of the 3 shots and that if you'll miss a meal, that you skip the shot also.

Deb, re: Moving to 10-Pen

Several people here have been on the 5-pen and plan to stay there indefinitely..

"Do you need to move up to 10 to see better numbers?".. Probably yes but there are people here who've seen no improvement by moving to 10. You said your doctor didn't want you going to 10...Can you tell us why?

If your numbers are already good and you want to move to get additional weight loss then your doctor may not go for that.

23 - Sorry to say, NO, I am still not doing well on this spit. Last night was the worst all week. I did as suggested, sipped on a little coke and later a nectar drink high in carbs for some nausea relief and to bring my BS up a bit. But, it just went from a low of 75 after injecting to a high at bedtime of 221! It probably went even higher as I never checked it again until late this morning what with daylight savings time upsetting the whole morning. It was a whopping 174 with the dawn effect at 9:46 am. I took my meds in the morning and waited to inject until 11:10 and within a half hour I was sick... and down to 143. All I could eat this morning was crackers and some dry puffed Kamut cereal. I also took a little coffee prior to injecting and a couple of sips of nectar a short time ago.

I went to the meals and nutrition forum but don't see any "specific" meals to help nausea. Could someone PLZ let me know exactly what I can eat especially in the AM that will lessen this nausea and subsequent vomiting? It sounds like many of you are at home and not out in the workplace and able to accomodate your issues but when you have no other option, it would be great to have a few specific ideas of what I can grab/fix on the run.

Also... any ideas on a nausea free dinner to keep me sane at night would be so helpful. ThanX for any and all replies.

PS: I have lost approx 5 lbs this week but that is because I can't eat... so sick and of course water weight, too. I don't consider that a healthy way to lose weight though. And,,, as another side effect my arthritis is not nearly as bad this week as normal. Quite surprising. (Comment this)

24 - DAVE;
If you are losing nearly a pound a week, then you certainly should not feel disappointed. If it's consistant then think about what that is in a year. I have not moved up to the to the 10, and I'am in my eighth month on the spit. I will not be moving up as long as I have satisfactory results. (Comment this)

26 - Thanks John and Shari for the responses.

My doctor thinks that upping the byetta dose for just
the potential weight loss is not the best thing to do.
Since he finds my numbers are near to the normal
non diabetic numbers, he does not see a reason to
move up to the bigger dose.

In truth, I want to move up because I think I will
lose weight faster. I have lost about a lb a week
but need to lose more than 40-50 lb to get to target weight. (Comment this)

27 - I really APPRECIATE this site for the education and good recommendations you all make.
I started Byetta yesterday this is day two. I feel nauseated so sip diet vernors (ginger ale)and have some ginger cookie things for those times I'm really feeling it. Althought I am not vomiting - this is very good :) I have a slight headache, tremendous mailais and diarrea. I ate very lightly yesterday because I don't want vomiting to be part of my adjustment. This morning I considered not injecting because I felt very nauseated but a couple of the little cookie things soothed my stomach over enough to inject/eat a little later. I feel about like I did yesterday except for an itchy area on my back I just can't reach.
I chose to start this week as it is spring break so I don't have to work. I am hoping I will have adjusted and figured enough about my needs to go back to work next week. I do not like to take time off.
A question about sleep medications... The slowed gastric emptying will affect absortion so about how long before bed time to I need to inject and still be able to absorb sleep meds? I go to bed early because of chronic fatigue.
Thanks in advance,

28 - AliceB,

Welcome to the blog... Glad you've joined us.

When you say you ate "very lightly"... can you be more specific? The reason I ask is because if you ate TOO lightly then you may've not eaten enough to prevent Nausea...course it's hard to tell because you're new to Byetta.. You'll want to see how the next couple of days go... some people get past the nasuea quickly and others take longer.

Vernors (best ginger ale around) should be really good for the stomach thing.

I'm presuming you eat fairly early if you go to bed early.? The Byetta half-life in your bloodstream is 2.4 hours and it's gone at 9-10 hrs... you should be ok if you have maybe 4 hrs between your shot and bedtime..

Please keep us posted on how it goes.

29 - Greetings everyone:
I have never felt so good lately... thanks Gilly!!! I have now been on the 5 for almost two months with the following results: weight loss of 18 pounds; after dinner bs levels in the low 120's to 110's; AC1 dropped from 7.4 to 7.2... still not great but going in the right direction; no more nausea, burping, and headaches. Although slightly lower, my morning bs levels are still around 170 to 190. I just can't seem to get these lower. I did notice that my appetite is starting to return... in fact there are times I am absolutely ravenous! I have one more week on the 5 before I start the 10 pen. Hopefully this will keep my numbers moving in the right direction as well as supress my appetite like before. Is it common for the 5 dose to "wear off" as quickly? I hope the same thing doesn't happen after I move up to the 10.
Thanks to all who make this blog possible... best reference on the web!

Luck to all,

30 - Hi Everyone,

I had a slight problem with my lunch meds and panicked this evening. I had lunch with my mom at a bingo and when I took my afternoon pills I somehow took my dinner 1000 mg metformin by mistake. Just before dinner I took my bs level and it was 71. I have never had a reading that low and was scared to death, so scared that I was afraid to take my shot. I even had a small glass of orange juice. Right after dinner my bs was 123. I was afraid if i took the shot I would go even lower.

I am guessing that my bs was ok at 71 and I panicked needlessly but this is only my 12th day taking the byetta and I am starting to consistently seeing numbers in the low 100's where before it was always very close to 200 if not over the 200 mark.

Could someone tell me if there is a range that it is recommended your bs be to inject the shot? For some reason I never thought about that before, which makes me feel a bit foolish. Also, would the orange juice I drank have counted as "eating" before the shot.

This site has been a constant help to me these past almost 2 weeks.

Thanks

32 - I'm having a hard time interpreting what my bgs are doing and how to change to make things better. I've been on bb for 2 1/2 weeks. Severe nausea, fatigue, etc. I'm also taking Amaryl 4mg/1x day; Actos 30 1x/day; metformin 1000 2x/day. Yesterday, two hours after my evening shot and a hot dog for dinner I dropped to 35. Tonight, I figured I better eat a heavier meal so I had a taco salad and a piece of fruit. A little over an hour later, I'm at 74. I'm calling my doc tomorrow to make an appt, but in the meantime, has anyone else experienced lows within 2 hours of dinner and shot? This hasn't been happening with my morning shot. Thanks for your experience! (Comment this)

33 - Hi Trish,

I was on the 5 pen for 26 days, I have been on the 10 pen for the last 4 days. I lost about 8 pounds on the 5 pen. I haven't had any side effects with the 10 except for total lack of an appetite. I haven't weighed myself yet so I don't know if I have lost any weight in the last few days. One thing that I have figured out, is if take my shot, eat, and stay active I feel great. If I take my shot, eat, and move to the couch, I end up cold and asleep in about a hour. I also found that I don't have much of an appetite but once I start its still a little hard to stop and than I feel stuffed almost to the point if not to the point of being uncomfortable. Good Luck! (Comment this)

37 - Hi everyone,
New here. In fact my first blog. Hope I do this right. I started on byetta 5 about 5 mos ago. I had 2 mos. of sample, thanks to my dr. When I found out my ins. would not pay and the amt of the cost, I realized I am not going to be able to afford this. So I went off & back up to 1500 glucophage. I had lost 12# in the 2 mos, but all of it is back except for 1 little #, which is my fault, of course, thinking I am hungry. Well, I got a mo coupon from my dr. 3 weeks ago to start again. Hubby says we will find a way to take the $200 every month. My appetite is back down ( not quite as much, I think) I am not weighing until drs. on the 6th. But I feel better in my clothes. I wanted to let a couple of the ones know that the 1st time I was nauseaus for 1 1/2 mos. before it got better, but this time I have only had a slight bit a couple times. I had 2 stints put in 2 weeks ago & it could be because I have been eating a lot less fat. I had thought it was just the shot the 1st time, but I do think it must have been the food I was eating. I also find that if I start eating at night, I have trouble stopping. Any suggestions on why this would be?? thanks (Comment this)

38 - Hey, Pam - sorry you're still having such a hard time. One question that floated across my mind: what is the sweetener in your fruit nectar? BGs in the 70s are not low, especially before a meal. If you're getting a lot of high fructose corn syrup, you're probably have highs and rebound lows from it.

Missy, I had been getting lows in the 60s 2 hours after dinner. The culprit is the Amaryl I'm still taking; I'm gradually cutting it back (down to 1 mg now) but the price of that is higher fbg readings.

It's a balancing act. I'm hoping that as the Byetta helps me lose weight, I can drop the Amaryl completely and still have good morning numbers.

39 - BETH: The mango nectar is by Kern's and it has 52 grams of carbs and 44 sugar grams, but even a Vernor's ginger ale has 39 of each. When I am down to a low of 70 I am shaking and have to get some relief fast. That is usually the fastest way to get it as glucose tablets take too long. I injected at 7:15 tonight and ate a light dinner about 15 minutes later including a ginger snap cookie. So far so good... it is now 8:42 pm and I am only a little cold at this point. Normally by now I am already nauseous. My BS was 110 when I injected and it is now 150. I am going to try to eat a ginger snap before bedtime to see if that helps with the 'dawn effect' I always get lately.

Keep your fingers crossed for me everyone! (Comment this)

40 - Hi Missy,

You say you're calling your doctor today... You might mention this that during the Byetta drug trials hypos occurred in several people that were taking a sulfonylurea class drug (like Amaryl) along with the Byetta. The effect of the Amaryl was enhanced by combining it with Byetta.

Amalyn, the maker of Byetta, suggests backing off on the sulfonylurea strength whenthe patient begins taking Byetta.

41 - hi How long do you wait after taking your shot to eat. I usually take it and eat within a few mins. I do not get that fullness feeling. I have been on 5mg for 3 weeks. I only found this site yesterday and have been looking at some of the old postings. I learned more here than my doc told me. Thanks for your help. trish (Comment this)

42 - Trish,

You can eat anytime between 1 minute after you take the shot to 60 minutes but generally speaking, the longer you wait (up to an hour) the more full you will feel.

If one is prone to nausea then people here have found waiting about 15 minutes works best.

43 - PENNY of PA -
Eating at night has always been my downfall, too. I don't know why this happens, but before Byetta I always felt hungry in the evening, and was constantly munching on something between dinner and bedtime. Perhaps it has something to do with our impaired insulin response to food. Byetta has helped me enormously with this - I don't eat as much at meals, and I don't feel hungry between meals. Good luck!

44 - Will be seeing my Dr later today. Have been on Big Brother since Nov 3rd. Haven't seen the dramatic weight losses, but just yesterday had more than one person said that they could tell that I have been on something. They noticed that I have dropped several inches in the waist. Average bg after eating has dropped from the 160 range to below 130. Am planning on recommending that we discontinue the Actos to see if that won't help with the weight loss. As a side note I find that the one item that spikes my bg is milk. (Comment this)

45 - Don, re: Actos

I was taking Actos 45's and found that I had significant water retention in my legs and feet..

Stopped the Actos and it took about 3 weeks to drain.

46 - Hi I have been on byetta 5mg for several weeks. Had to cut down to 1 injection a day. still on 1 shot and many( most ) days feel sick and kind of strange. Since I can only tolerate 1 injection can i use the same syringe for 2 months as long as i keep ie properly refrigerated ? Sugars have been really good . Wish I felt better.

47 - Has anyone noticed that a meal that contains cheese seems to make nausea worse ? Everytime I would take a shot and eat a meal with cheese I would vomit . That was a lesson learned and one I will not repeat. (Comment this)

48 - Hi everyone. I was wondering if the Diabetes Doctor could answer a question for me, or maybe someone else knows. I started on the Byetta 5 six months ago. My Aic went down and I lost about 20 pounds. My bgs were in the 90s. My weight seemed to stop there and my Dr. just put me on the 10 dose a week ago. Since then my bgs don't seem to be doing as good. I have the nausea again, too. I knew that would happen but why have my #s gone up? I woke up early this morning not feeling well. My hands were swollen for some reason. I was too hot, I think, but I thought my sugars were too low. That's how I was feeling. I went in to take my level and it was 116. I know that's not bad, but they were lower before. I drank a glass of water and took the level again after 1 1/2 hours and it had gone up to 146. I hadn't taken my Byetta yet or eaten anything. I don't understand it. Anybody else have this problem? Is it normal? Thanks for listening. (Comment this)

49 - Well I had my 1st neg reation to the spit (I can live with one in almost 4wks). I took my morning shot at 7 AM and had a light breakfast. I then took my 2nd shoot around 1:30PM because I was going to have a big lunch. My timing was off and I actually did not get a chance to eat until around 3PM. It went straight downhill from there. I'm not sure if it was the early 2nd shot or not eating for 1.5 hrs. My stomach was upset for the next day. The only upside was I quickly dropped a couple of pounds - the hard way if you know what I mean. Does anyone know if the 6.5 hrs between shots was the culprit or not eating for 1.5 hrs or perhaps a combination of both. (Comment this)

50 - Good morning, all.

Anthony, 6.5 hours is pretty close together, though it is within the range that Amylin says is acceptable. Everyone's body is different, though.

Diana, the literature says that you should discard the pen 30 days after starting it. Some people have noticed that the spit becomes less effective as they approach the 30th day.

Trish, I'm one of those who suffers from ongoing queasiness. I usually eat 15 to 20 minutes after the shot. I check my bg before injecting, and if it's high, I eat something right away in order to fend off a low triggered by the glucose already in my bloodstream. Going low (into the 60s) will make me very nauseated.
