Yes.. a couple people here have reported pen delivery failures. If anyone thinks this is happning with their pen they should call the Byetta Hotline at:
(800) 868-1190
Dave,
After I responded to you last night about taking the pen to someone's house it occurred to me that you may be trying to conceal the pen and/or your T-2 from your guests.
I would suggest that for a couple hours you could carry the pen in the inside pocket of a suit coat, a jacket etc.
I suppose all of us are different but I choose not to conceal my T-2 from anyone. I figure that if I ever had a hypoglycemic emergency that I would want all those around me to understand what was happening to me and to help.
I work as a computer consultant and recently I worked in a room that had one large conference table in it with 8 of us sitting around the table, working on a project. This went on day after day, for months.
Early on I mentioned my T-2 to my associates at the table and suggested to them that if they ever looked at me and I didn't look well or "with it" to simply ask "John, how do you feel?" and that I would understand the message.
I worked with the president of a large company a few years ago who was also T-2, but he kept it concealed from everyone but me. He wanted to discuss it from time to time, but felt he couldn't trust anyone but me because I was out in the open about my T-2.
The Medicool travel case that Mark from Missouri & the others in the Travel Forum talk about is pretty non-descript... A simple blue bag that could easily be mistaken for one of those lunch bags that a lot of people carry things to work in.
Hope this helps.

the first thing i noticed was no sicky feelings than a higher bg heard those clicks to that don't mean much now i got tired and chest pains to don't like that at all
i think it will take me a few days to get in order again
have to take half my pulls again
Dan didn't you take bs readings how did you miss them high bs #'s (Comment this)
There must be at least 6 hours between shots so I would suggest skipping the evening shot.
John (Comment this)
(2) Also: if you haven't yet answered our polls to tell us more about yourself, we'd encourage you to please do so:
(Comment this)You should eat from 1 to 60 minutes after you take the shot.
Several of us here have found that if you're prone to nausea then the sooner you eat after taking the shot the less you will be affected by nausea and the longer you wait (up to the 60 minutes) the more appetite supression you gain.
John (Comment this)
Since you said that you already have taken a morning shot (and your message was timed at around 8:00 this morning) there will be plenty of time passed for you to take the evening shot if you want. I would suggest that you probably will want to take the shot with a small snack. If it were me in that situation (because I have been a couple of times) what would happen is that I'd be fine until late in the evening then my system without the Byetta would start kicking in and I would get ravenously hungry before bedtime (10:00 PM would be 9 hours since you ate and no Byetta to slow digestion or curb hunger). Then I'd tend to want to eat something late and would really be messed up. I think whenever you feel like you can handle it, maybe like 6:00 or 7:00 you could do your shot and have a snack or light supper whicher you feel like. That would carry you through the night. Going from 1:00 in the afternoon and trying to go until the next morning without eating is likely to bring on dawn phenomena when your system runs out of resources in the middle of the night. (Comment this)
One other thing. I was talking about the high bg reading I got last evening, so I went ahead an took the humalog. I woke up at 4am and knew something was wrong, bg was 65. Almost 300 points drop! (I had taken 7 units on the sliding scale) Guess it would have been better to ride out the high reading for a while? I ate an orange and at 7am was back to a comfortable 121. Everyday is a learning process. (Comment this)
Just telling you what someone else using Byetta (but not on this blog) told me. She talked about this again on Friday and I don't recall if I mentioned this here before. In my experience it does not matter whether I do stomach or thigh shots. However this person said that if she does stomach shots it seems to hit her harder and she gets near nausea. If she does thigh shots things go smoothly. For insulin (and so I assume for other injected medications) the absorption rate is faster in the slightly stomach than in the thighs. If anyone is struggling with nausea and is only doing shots in one area you might try another body area to see if it makes a change. Stomach (avoiding next to the belly button), thighs (on top or outside but not inside), back of arms) (Comment this)

its got the same stock number the last one had that stopped a around 2 weeks did i get immune to it or what
i walked more today than ever did, since taking byetta don't feel so good anymore either
just had 2 MRI and x-ray friday , would that be doing this? (Comment this)
John in KY, I think you should call the Byetta Hotline tomorrow about these pens. X-rays and MRIs shouldn't have any effect, but if you are stressed about some physical condition, or ill, that certainly could have an effect. (Comment this)
Hello John, sorry you are having troubles now. Are you sure your meter is operating properly and your test strips are good? Also, even on Byetta if you are eating a meal with a lot of starchy foods, breads, white potatos, white rice, for example, foods with high amount of carbs, sugars, etc,. the BG's will still go up, even over 200. I'm sorry you are not feeling well, but there could be many possibilites for this too. Have you discussed these issues with the doctor who is treating your Diabetes? Hope you are feeling better soon John. (Comment this)

I have been reading the blogs for months and have not found anyone saying that the air bubble was a problem. As a precaution, though, it has been suggested that you turn the neddle down before you inject and lightly flick the cylinder so the bubble rises to the top.
About the drop on the needle tip. I try to be sure that there is a tiny drop there before I inject. My last pen was having problems with delivering a dose. Amylin sent me a voucher for a new one. In the meantime, I got another from my pharmacy because I always get my new pens two weeks before need in case of trouble. This pen appears to have the same problem of not delivering every time. So, I do both dialings and hold th pen to the light and see if there is a tiny drop. If so then I inject. If not, I push the plunger and more often than not get no fluid out. I don't mind losing a few shots with trials because the amount in the pen allows for that but I now have to watch this new pen carefully. If this continues to happen I will call Amylin again. Also the rep I talked to says that sometimes if there is a miss, you should prime once more since sometimes a double dose comes out after a miss. This is due to the pressure in the cylinder.I'm not thrilled with this info either. I agtee with the person who said that plastics cannot be machined for accuracy. I am hoping that Amylin reads the blogs and takes heed of this problem. I can't be the only one who has run across it.

I don't think it stops working, if it works at all. And I expect to be on it, or something like it, for the rest of my life. It seems pretty clear from my body's reaction that I've been in need of GLP-1 for a long time. (Comment this)
Also, later this year I am taking a very long trip that involves about 20 hours of flying plus trips too and from the airport. Does anyone know if Airlines will store my pen in their refrigerator for the actual flight? (Comment this)
It's a good idea to use a new needle. The very fine needles that are so much more comfortable are quickly eroded with use. I change my lancet needle at least once a day, and can really feel the difference! (Comment this)
I have changed my signature line - NO MORE Amaryl! ;-)
Mark (Comment this)
Let's try that one more time; re: revised signature line!
Mark (Comment this)
I agree with Beth, some folks do not change their lancets frequently, but I have had the least amount of pain sticking my fingers when I never use a lancet more than a couple of times, and I frequently use a fresh lancet for each test (4-6 times a day). Adds a little to the cost, but lancets are pretty cheap to start.
Re: using a new needle each time - Amylin recommends that you not store the pen with a needle attached. They do not state a reason, but probably for general safety.
Several of the people on this forum have experienced an issue of having a reaction to Byetta when it comes in contact with the skin, and reusing a needle is a common cause since some very small portion of Byetta is left in the needle after each shot. Re-using a needle is also unsanitory and may require that you clean the needle between uses.

ANNIE IN TEXAS-- My employer recently changed drug providers and the new carrier did not cover Byetta. However, I made a reguest via a PRIOR APPROVAL form they provided and received notice in a few days that I was now covered. Perhaps, your insurance will work the same magic for you. I just paid $285.00 for a three month supply. Certainly not the cheapest co-pay, but it is a 2/3 reduction.
MARK (NO MORE AMARYL)-- Congratulations on a great success.
PEN DISCUSSIONS-- Prior to starting Byetta, I was a user of Hulolog insulin Pens for many years. I took 5 shots daily and never had a Pen problem. Not Once! The pens were from Eli Lily and the mechanics were identical except that the doses were flexible, as opposed to fixed as are the Byetta pens. I began Byetta on 12/7/05 and I am now on my 5th pen. I have not had a single problem to report. It is difficult to understand how the manufacturers quality control can have such varied results. I trust they are looking into the matter.

Hope your Easter holiday was a dandy one and those with Passover, I wish you the best too. I did a very foolish thing with my pen the night before last. We went out to dinner and I had it in the little travel case w 2 gel packs and placed that into my purse after injecting. When we got home, I forgot to take it out of my bag but did not realize this until 4 or 5 hours later. I put it back as soon as I realized it and have been using it since. It is nearly a full pen and hopefully will be ok. I am still living to tell the tale so I trust that is a good sign.
I feel compelled to ask all ofyou how you get all that info by your name in "Blue." I have been typing it after my blurb and it comes out in black. This gal is a slow learner with blog tasks.LOL
Next month I will be seeing the endocrinologist. I want to see if he will put me on the 10 pen only because the wonderful effects re appetite suppression are abating. My blood sugars consequently have been better but are not horrible ie this morning it was 128- not horrible but could be better. Don't you think that is the rationale for going up to the 10? Comments?

Yes... 128 is not a bad number but you can probably improve that with the 10. And hopefully the full effect of the appetite supression will return.
Polly,
There are a couple people here who rarely change needles but here's what Becton Dickson & COmpany (BD needles & supplies) says about needle reuse:
The tip of a reused needle can be weakened to the point where it breaks off and gets stuck under your skin.
A reused needle doesn't inject as easily or as cleanly as a new one and can cause pain, bleeding, and bruising.
Studies have shown that there's a link between needle reuse and the appearance of lumps of fatty tissue that can form at an injection site (lipodystrophy).
There's also a magnified view of new & reused needles on their website.. I think anyone considering reusing needles should at least look at the pictures first.
http://www.bddiabetes.com/us/yourinsulin/howto_risk.asp
Even if you do choose to reuse needles, they should be removed between shots. Otherwise you can get leakage of Byetta through the needle.
Mark,
Good going on dropping the Amaryl..
Judy, re: Air Bubbles
You can clear large air bubbles by repeating the new pen setup procedure. Small bubbles sometimes remain and will not cause you a problem.

To get your personal "history" into the blue section, just type the information into the "Name:" field in the "Write a comment" area at the bottom of the BLOG (above whee you type your email address). Don't worry if it looks like your information is too long to fit, just keep typing and the text field will scroll over to make space for more typing. Per Dr. Bill's direction, try to keep the information short enough that it takes no more than 2 lines to print it - apparently a 3rd line is not handled equally well by the various computer web browser software.

Like John, I also advise my co-workers (some, not all) about my T-2. I want them to be aware and prepared to ask if I am OK if I start exhibiting signs of hypoglycemia.
(I also work in the computer field, and in this career it is not uncommon to find yourself working some strange hours in somewhat stressful situations.)
I also explained to my friends about my T-2 because when I am out to a dinner/show, golfing, fishing, etc.; responding to a hypo problem could potentially be more difficult than responding to a hypo issue at work.
The smallest way to keep the pen chilled is to use the free Travel Pack from Amylin. If you don't have the free Travel Pack, call the Amylin hotline and you can order one at no cost. However - see the Traveling with Diabetes forum on this BLOG for directions on how to make the Travel Pack last more than 1-2 hours by replacing the Gel packs. The Travel Pack is small enough to fit in some coat pockets.

Your BG may have been high due to the Easter dinner. If you inject on a high Bg your Bg is very likely to crash. (Comment this)
I have been on Byetta since mid-September of 2005. Thus far, I have lost 40 pounds - a little more than 20 percent of my overall body weight. My last A1C was 6.0 and my doctor is very pleased with my overall progress. My cholesterol has also dropped about 50 points.
I agree that as you continue to take Byetta, the initial "full" feeling subsides. That's when the real work kicks in! I reduced my portion sizes during the beginning months on Byetta and have managed to continue with smaller portions. I exercise rigorously six days a week - either a spin class, weight-lifting, or jogging two to three miles. With the weight loss, I have more energy and look and feel better than I have in years.
I am now off all oral meds except 500 mg of Glucophage once a day after lunch. I think Byetta is a miracle drug! I have tried for years to lose weight and I could not lose much because of all the oral insulin. The weight is still coming off, but more slowly now. I wanted to let everyone know that Byetta helps with weight loss, but that you also have to do your part.

<<What do I do about the evening shot. Can I take it with a snack or do I skip it.>>
I often take my evening shot with a snack, especially when I've had an early dinner. For me, Byetta seems to work for all my meals and snacks during the day, not just with the meal that accompanies the injection. On days where I'll inject Byetta before a snack, I make an effort not to overeat or overcarb at dinner, even saving part of it....usually the dessert....for my snack later on. I just make sure I have some carbs at that snack. I hate to skip a shot, figuring I'm going to interrupt the balance I've got going with my fasting and post-prandial sugars.
BYETTA TRAVELS and POST 30 DAY SNEAKINESS:
I had to travel to a wedding this past weekend where the ceremony would be at 6 pm on the beach, a cocktail hour inside at 7 pm, and dinner at 8 pm. I was trying to figure out how to best chill the Byetta for a long period between leaving the hotel for the ceremony and actually having dinner a number of hours later....and then keeping it chilled for several hours afterwards until the reception was over at midnight. I know people here have made good suggestions but I didn't want to risk screwing up the refrigeration with an almost new pen. So, in preparation for this weekend, I stopped the previous pen at 29 days a week ago, saving two more doses in the epipen. While I know we're supposed to toss it after 30 days, I figured there's not way the product turns bad after the 60th shot or 30th day; that would be way too risky for the company. Worse case, it might just not work which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. So, I took Big Boy along in his officially chilled Byetta case and plopped that into an insulated carrying bag along with a few of the freezer packs outside the Byetta case. I also dropped in a refrigerator thermometer. The temp stayed perfect for hours. Of course, I was teased a lot about bringing a bag for leftovers...LOL! I used the old epipen and adminstered shot 59 at the wedding about half way through the cocktail hour and it worked just perfectly for dinner. My appetite suppression was normal and my blood sugars headed straight for 81 after dinner. I used the last shot, #60, the next morning, having put the entire bag into the hotel room refrig. The morning shot was just as efficient as all the others. While I'm not advocating disregarding the manufacturer's directions, it worked for me just fine and I didn't have to worry about ruining a perfectly good, almost new epipen.
CHERYLLOU:
<<I was under the impression I had to wait an hour to eat after the byetta shot.>>
You are supposed to start eating within an hour after injecting Byetta. Some of us have found that eating right after injecting seems to help keep the nausea at bay while others have found that if you wait until almost the end of the hour, you get better appetite suppression. I generally inject then start making the meal, usually eating within 10 to 20 minutes after injecting. I still deal with mild queasiness, but the appetite suppression has been pretty consistent since the first day. (Comment this)
I'm not clear why eating at 2pm would pursh your dinner shot to 8 or 9pm? If your first shot was at 7am...you eat before 8, then you eat lunch at 2pm then you can take your second shot at 4pm (2 hrs after lunch) and eat at 5pm.
Susan,
WOW.!!! Great progress..
I notice you do a lot of exercising.. Do you notice if that helps reduce your appetite?
AND...only taking 500mg Glucophage... That's pretty close to being off..
"..you also have to do your part".. Sound words.. To me that means exercising even when I don't feel like it and resisting the call of the snacks..even when that's REALLY difficult.
Thanks for your story.

I had something very strange happen this evening and I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on it.
When I took my evening shot, I immediately knew that I hit a blood vessel close to the skin. I've done that before and other than a little discomfort, no big deal. But tonight, after I took the needle off the pen and was putting the pen away, I noticed a little drop of blood in the pen. Has anyone had this happen before? Will this hurt the pen in any way? Should I throw it away?
Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Is it just me or is everyone seeing the blog in a new format? I wondered as I didn't see any comments on it. I'm not sure I like it. It's hard to see what page I'm on (the number of the page is not highlighted in any way) and if I use the "next" button, I go to a page with no messages on it. But yet if I click on the number of the page, instead of using the next button, there are messages??
SUSAN & JOHN RE WEIGHT LOSS
Your thoughts echo my endo's comment last week. He felt that Byetta was helping my weight loss, but attributed 80% of my recent success to improved portion control and increased exercise. (Comment this)
You aren't the first. You do need to call Amylin. In the past they have allowed the others to get a replacement at the pharmacy immediately. The pen is considered contaminated now. Do not discard it, as they may want you to return it to them. (Comment this)
One great thing is the weight loss, started out at 157 on March 31, I am 5'4", 56 years old, and today at the doctors office I weighed 140! I don't see the endo until May so hopefully my weight will be down even more by then. I have never seen anything like the weight loss, I
can best describe it as never being hungry and sweets that were once my weakness are no temptation anymore.
Thank you all for this incredible board. It has saved me many calls to my Joslin Clinic, and provided me with so much support. You all are awesome. Hoping to deal with this nausea. DD (Comment this)
Yes...the new format reduces the amount of data that blog.com sends to each user.. It's now limited to about 200 lines, of which 50 are used by Dr. Bill to describe the rules of the road.
It should result in faster downloads but I notice they haven't got the page numbering working right yet...
LisaB,
Call the Byetta Hotline and tell them what happened. They'll replace the pen.

Also if the Byetta does warm up over 40 degrees what happens to it? Is it still effective? Will it hurt you if you use it? (Comment this)
