Suggestions for improvements of this website

After the recent "blogquake" at this blog, which now seems a thing of the past, I decided to set up this Discussion Forum for any suggestions for improvements at Diabetes.Blog.com that readers might have. Some of them would be easy to implement (e.g., a new Discussion Forum on some topic or other) and some impossible, but if you have a brainstorm, please share it with others and me and if it can be implemented, will do.

Also, if you have comments about the mechanics of the blog (like how to post comments!), here's your chance to vent.

Your thoughts, please...

Please review and follow our usual ground rules, at Ground Rules
. (To share your thoughts, use the "Comments" link immediately below.)

1 - Whoa...a new forum... what should I say... should be something meaningful...

ok...I think I've got it...

I REALLY like the 50 page break...actually more than before blog.com decided to "fix" things... because now I don't have to wait for the whole blog paage to load... As it turned out, I have a fast cable connection but blog.com was...well bogged down..so this dhould help.

Oh yes...the suggestion... The only improvement I can see over the 50 comments per page would be if Blog.com could do a page break on the clock...going from 23:59:59 to 00:00:00...

You are more likely to get a response ti=o this question if you post it at the Skin Complications forum. Just click on it over on the right hand margin. (Comment this)

8 - Dr Bill, I think you are doing a splendid job on what has become an overwhelming realm of material/opinions. Is there any way to do a search by either name of contributor or specific comment w/o wading through all the material. I personally go to the bottom of each topic and work my way backward as far as I feel the urge at the time. However, if I wanted to go back to a comment that I read in the past, it would be pretty tedious, especially if that comment were written a while back.
So, can that be done? (Comment this)

9 - Donna: The only way I know you could go back would be to know the exact words or phrase you're searching for, and use the "Search Diabetes.Blog.com" concept that's on the sidebar here (the search is actually at the Diabetes Monitor website, at http://www.diabetesmonitor.com/searchdbc.htm).

But that search is updated only once a night, so it wouldn't work for comments that have been added in the past 24 hours.

Anyone else have any other thoughts? (Comment this)

10 - I've sent a request to the support staff at Blog.com to add a hyperlink at the collection of links that you see on multipage comments:

Previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 Next

so that the first one would be a new one: Top

so it would look like

Top Previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 Next

Clicking on this new hyperlink will cause your webbrowser to go to the top of the current page.

I was advised that this might be added sometime this coming week. (Comment this)

11 - FYI: The folks at Blog.com have just added at the bottom of every page of comments a new hyperlink that I had suggested, to allow you to bounce upward to the top of the same page.

If they are reading this, many thanks! (Comment this)

16 - Is there anyway to remove a comment when you have made an error. I tend to make mistakes and would like to beable fix a comment I made. (Comment this)

17 - Angela:
Once a comment is posted, the comment can only be changed (or deleted) by the blog's administrators (currently Steph and myself).

If there's a huge error, post a followup comment immediately, clarifying what the error was.

Steph and I review all comments several times most days (we get an e-mail that indicates what was posted) and we can change erroneous information if needed (and delete followup comments if any).

You could also send an e-mail to info@diabetesmonitor.com to let us know of glitches (whether yours or someone else!).

Hope this helps!

18 - Dr. Bill,

Can you put a link in the area of "Discussion Forums at Diabetes.Blog.com" for the "Byetta Shortage" forum? I think some of us are having trouble finding it since you changed the "What's New at Diabetes. Blog. com" to "A devastating setback". Thank you!!!!

19 - I have learned so much here! Thank you everyone!

I have a poor memory and sometimes find myself re-reading posts I've already read because I lose my place in the posts... they accumulate so fast!

I wonder if there is a way to use a cookie to show us what comments we have already read and what comments are new...?

I can provide a website that does this if you want to see what I mean.

Thanks for listening.

God bless,

20 - Is there any way to put the name of the forum next to the page numbers that is above the comment boxes? I think it might make it easier to be sure we are posting in the correct forum (and had not jumped over to another forum thinking we were elsewhere). That way we would not have to scroll up and double check each time. It would be right there for us to see that we are in the forum we mean to be in. Just a thought... (Comment this)

23 - Dr. Bill~

Thanks for this site--it's a Godsend for us. I've been lurking on this site since Feb 06. When I have nausea, I come here to this support group of friends, and it helps immensely for me to cope and feel better.

How about taking the "written by" line currently located at the bottom of each message and moving it to the top of each message? I like to see who's writing a message before I read it; and presently I have to scroll down to the end of the message to see who's writing and then scroll back up to read the message.

Thanks so much (and also thanks to all of the regular message writers--they're wonderful people). (Comment this)

The location of author's information is under the control of Blog.com.

For a short while, they did have the names at the top, then moved them back to the bottom (that was back at the time of one of the blogquakes that periodically occur when they decide to make huge changes!).

To tell the truth, I had gotten so used to seeing them at the bottom that when they moved them to the top, it was irritating.

Since it's purely personal preference, I have shrugged my shoulders and said "whatever"...

Thanks for writing. (Comment this)

25 - Dr. Bill, I am new to diabetes.blog, but really have appreciated the comments I've read on the various forums. My suggestion (if not available already and overlooked by me) is to add the latest post date for each discussion forum. Maybe because it's summer, but there doesn't appear to have been much activity on any of the forums since spring. Knowing the latest post date would save a lot of wasted searching to the end of each blog for new contributions. btw, I think this may be the best of the various online forums I have found. I have especially enjoyed the camaraderie and intelligent, researched comments of the participants. Thanks!

27 - Bill the diabetesdoc, Thanks, but I think we may be talking about two different things. I'm suggesting that the date of the last post submitted by anyone is given next to the forum name in the list of the discussion forums on the home page (e.g., "Byetta" last post date 2006/04/24; "Cholesterol, triglycerides, lipids" last post date 2006/08/16). (Comment this)

28 - Dr. Bill--Thank you SO much for all the you do with this site! It was a Godsend when I found it after being newly diagnosed with T2!!!!

One idea to consider....would it be possible to add another forum along the lines of a Frequently Asked Questions for Byetta Newbies? I know that when I was first looking at Byetta and then first started it, I had a ton of newbie questions. EVERYONE here was so patient and sweet, and answered all of my questions and calmed my fears. Since reading the blog everyday now, I see that there are new people coming on almost everyday with the exact same fears and questions that I had. While I still think the personal interaction is the best "medicine," if some of those things were posted on a separate forum, newbies could get those answers immediately.

Certainly not a complaint - just an idea :-) You are doing magnificent, as are all the contributors to the site!

THANK YOU for what you do for us!!!!! (Comment this)

31 - I'm doubting this is a suggestion that can/will be taken, but I'll comment anyway.

I'd sure like to see these discussions in a regular discussion forum, with User control panels, threads, etc. as opposed to a blog. That is so much more efficient and conducive to true discussions.

That being said, it is a wonderful site, and moderated very well. (comment based on reading the Byetta blog). (Comment this)

32 - Is there any way that we can start with the most recent page? There seems to be some confusion perhaps, with those that are not familiar with the format and they are commenting on old posts which are on the page that shows up when you log on. It's confusing enough when they respond to "comment this" on old posts which makes it difficult to keep a smoothe flow of subject matter. The tendency, when using the "Comment This" feature is to not make reference to the person who wrote it or the subject matter. Even the one who wrote the post initially may not even remember if it's from weeks ago. (Comment this)

Yes, you can start at the newest comment. If you click on the Discussion Forum links on the right sidebar (listed at "Discussion Forums at Diabetes.Blog.com"), you'll automatically be taken to the last page of comments (or sometimes, due to a glitch in the system, a new page at the end where you'll have to back up one page).

Hope this helps! (Comment this)

35 - Dr. Bill, It would be unbelievably helpful if your gurus could be identified so that a new user or in fact any user knows that a particular person has the knowledge and a degree of expertice to be listened to, somewhat. I don't believe there would be any increased liability because it certainly would not be medical advice unless it comes directly from you. Shatri, CindyLou and many others fall into a pecial category but you must read the messages for weeks to know that they can in fact be listened to. Please consider. PS you are doing a magnificent job and a true life saving service with these sites !!

Newbies may not know that and they start reading the page that appears when they log on. It's usually way back and some don't realize they are not on a current page. Why can it not "open" at the current page when you log on? It had been doing that for a while in the beginning of this new format. (Comment this)

39 - Toneylee: Yes, a minor blogquake seems to have occurred. It looks like the blog.com software gets sick to its stomach when 100 pages of comments are posted, as they were to the Byetta Discussion Forum.

I have just closed the prior Byetta forum, and opened a new one. Sadly, it seems some comments were lost along the way.

44 - Dr. Bill, you may be working on this already, but since that recent blogquake I understand you started new forums as a protective measure or something, but now can the former ones be restored? We have no prior comments in ODDS and ENDS, MEALS, EATING, NUTRITION, BYETTA of course and I don't know how many others. And GREETINGS or HUG Island has both forums listed but the one with the prior comments is closed to our comments. Can these forums be reopened as they were before the blogquake and allow us to post comments on them again rather than losing all the history of that forum and starting with a new one? I'm hoping that is what you are working on. When forums get closed and stuck in the archives they tend to get ignored. There was some very valuable information in all the forums I mentioned and we continually referred folks to information there and had ongoing discussions taking place there at the time of the blogquake. Any help restoring these to their original state would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

48 - Sharicatmom: To quote an esteemed ancient authority: "All the King's horses and all the King's men couldn't put Humpty together again".

One can always search using my extended search if you know the keywords you want to look up, but I suspect you're thinking of folks who want to read everything in an old forum in the order that the comments were created?

Anyway, since we now have scrambled eggs, let's make lemonade (oops, that's a mixed metaphor): I'll create a list of the most popular Discussion Forums and include both current and past versions, and put it on the sidebar, if folks want. Later today, I'll put up a sample of what I propose...
