Fundraising for diabetes
I reserve the right to delete promotions for organizations that are not directly diabetes-related, or which are spinoffs from commercial organizations, or which are solicitations for money to help a single affected individual.
Examples of appropriate organizations would include ADA, CDA, DiabetesUK, and JDRF and their local affiliates. Smaller local organizations raising funds for diabetes are usually appropriate. Organizations soliciting supplies (or requests from organizations for supplies) may also be appropriate.
Inappropriate organizations might include American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and other similar disease-oriented organizations. It is also inappropriate for fundraising on behalf of a single person (example: to help a poor teenager get an insulin pump).
Please review and follow our usual ground rules, at Ground Rules. (To share your thoughts, use the "Comments" link immediately below.)

I will be riding in a "Tour de Cure" 100K bicycle ride in Tyrone Georgia on May 21. This ride benefits the American Diabetes Association. I am soliciting sponsors to help fund more research for wonderful drugs like the "Spit". You may make a fully deductible sponsorship for me with a Credit Card at

On September 9, 2006, I will bike 45 miles with over 200 cyclists in support of finding a cure for diabetes, and I am asking you to help me reach my personal fund-raising goal of $5,000.
Imagine giving your 3-year-old child up to six injections (shots) a day in the leg or arm and sticking those little fingers or toes several times a day to check their blood glucose levels.
My little sister, Ashley, was that 3-year old, and now at 22 still struggles to regulate her blood sugar levels, which can be life threatening. In fact, recently, her blood sugar dropped so low (her blood sugar was 22; normal is 70 to 120) that her husband awoke to her shaking body and wide-open, pupil-dilated eyes in time to rush her to the hospital; she was unconscious. Luckily, they revived her with a glucose injection.
While insulin allows a person with type-1 diabetes (often termed “juvenile diabetes”) to stay alive, it does not cure the disease, nor does it prevent the development of serious complications, which can lead to kidney failure, blindness, limb amputation, heart attack, stroke, and even death.
Over 18 million Americans are affected by diabetes. And, in an effort to find a cure, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has awarded more money for diabetic research than any other charitable organization-more than $900 million since its founding in 1970, including over $98 million in FY 2005 alone. Moreover, more than 80 percent (80 cents of every dollar) goes directly to research and research-related organizations.
I hope you will sponsor my participation in this event; any amount will help the work of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. And, yes, your donations are 100% tax deductible. Please make your donation on-line at http://ride.jdrf.org.
Thank you for considering this request for your support. JDRF is truly an amazing organization. One final note, my deadline for raising this money is July 1, 2006.
Yours truly,
Shannon N. Hicks

My name is Joe and I plan to run the P.F. Changs Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon this upcoming January 14, 2007. I have selected my race sponsor to be the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Their non-profit mission aims to help prevent and cure diabetes, as well as improve the lives of all those who have already been diagnosed with it.
Each year, more than 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with this disease and it’s estimated more than 20 million people (1 in 15) across the country now have some form of it. There is no cure for diabetes and more than 220,000 Americans will die annually from this disease.
I would kindly ask your assistance within the next few weeks to help sponsor me by donating an amount of your choice to this cause. It might be $10, $25, or maybe even $50, but only contribute what you are financially comfortable in providing. All of your proceeds are 100% tax deductible, and will go directly to the ADA for supporting their prevention, treatment, awareness, and research efforts of this growing epidemic.
If you would like to make a charitable contribution, here is what you need to do:
1) Access the Internet and visit http://www.diabetes.org/teamdphoenix/donate
2) Enter demographic & payment information in the TEAM DIABETES Donation form.
3) When it asks you for the TEAM D participant, please enter "JOE BIANCONI".
4) Click SUBMIT when finished and a message should appear thanking you for registering your TEAM D donation with the American Diabetes Association.
It’s that easy! If you encounter any problems or have questions though, please ask me ASAP and I will be happy to accommodate you as best as possible for this charitable event. I hope this message finds everyone in good spirits and health!
Kind Regards,
Joe Bianconi

excellent press-package to get our sponsors noticed by the media in all of the towns we pass through during the 2007 RAAM, and to raise
money for the American Diabetes Association.
I will be the first Type 1 diabetic to compete in the Solo Division in the history of the RAAM. So far my sponsors include Keiser, PowerBar, MioWatch, DiNotte Lighting, Titanflex Bicycles, Atac sportswear, and Adidas.
I am looking for a few good men/women as support crew members and a minivan support vehicle. The race begins in California on June 10th
and finishes in Atlantic City, NJ (see
www.raceacrossamerica.org for all of the details.)
Thanks to Dr. Quick for his encouragement.
Sincerely,
Tom Seabourne, Ph.D.

I thought your blog readers might be interested.

I lost my sister to Type 1 diabetes 10 years ago and I am also insuline dependant. Type 1 diabetes is very hard for children needing to take multiple shots and checking their sugar levels by poking their fingers every day. Please help me raise my goal and more or consider looking up a walk near your town and starting your own walk.
Thanks for your consideration and support. (Comment this)

I have the same question as your blog. Did you receive any information on the process of how to start a fundraiser? My girlfriends son (8 yrs old) was diagnosed two months ago and we would like to put one together to help fund diabetes research. I appreciate your help.
